The Rebuild Begins 1980's 222 CCP

Last week I acquired this 1980's 222 CCP 18 degree deadrise. I've got a list of the main things I want to do which i'll put below. Feel free to give me some do's and don'ts or ideas yall have.

Fully close transom with Grady white style fold away bench seat.

Add molded spot on right side of transom for 25 quart bait/chum cooler.
Built in tackle storage/ dry box on other side.

Armstrong style floatation bracket with swim platform.

Raised custom center console with head under. Either porta or plumbed.

Hard T-top with electronic box and maybe 3/4 tower.

Leaning post with tackle storage, rod holders and livewell.

Lockable rod storage both gunnels.

Raised front deck with 2 rectangle fish boxes/ dry storage, Livewell , molded spot for yeti 65 quart, anchor storage.

Partially cut hull cap with 10-12" wide walk/sit all the way around except wider in bow nose of course.

Haven't planned out much else. Working on getting some pictures up.

Got a little time to rip into the floor before the honey do's took over. There is some wet foam but stringers seem to be solid. Transom will get cleaned up next.

Did you check to see if the foam is wet in the stringers?

There are about 6 2" dia fill holes on the top on the stringers. I took a jimmy rigged coring tool and popped out samples all the way to the hull. It looked 100% dry and fresh to me. Is there any other place or way I should check?

Garrett that sounds good. When you mention wet foam you were referring to the poured foam under the deck then. Sounds like you have some good stringers.

I did not take up my deck but where I could reach those holes on top of the stringers I fiberglass over them to seal them up.

Well I was going to leave everything but once I got into it the rot was sorta everywhere and it seemed like the thing to do. I got half of the foam popped loose this afternoon (including the pool noodles  :?  ). I'm going to finish cut the top cap, take out the remaining foam and finish trimming the transom area hopefully this week.

OK Jdog,
Two things....

First,
DON'T click on the "Img" button in the "Reply" box toolbar......

Second'
Click on the bottom "url" for a full size pic.

You have the "getting to your photo gallery album" down pat. :cheers:

You now need to click (right click and then click "save") or click (left) and keyboard save (via Ctrl C) and just paste it into your post.

Again, do not hit the "Img" box in the tool bar.

That command is used when posting from another photo site like Photo Bucket.

I was feeling a bit lonely as the CCP rebuilds are a bit outnumbered at the moment. Man, I love hearing about anyone tearing into a CCP. I love hearing about all the rebuilds but working on my 2nd CCP makes them special to me. Thats a great punch list you have set up for your 222 CCP. Look forward to seeing all your progress and ideas take shape.

As for the stringers, I could have probably gotten away with not gutting them out but I did have a little water in them. Its a crap shoot which varies boat to boat. I would drill a 1/2 hole both port and starboard, where the rear inner corner of the stringer meets the hull and see if anything weeps out. If not you are lucky and have saved yourself a few hard days of not having to gut them out. Check out my build and feel free to use anything you see. Good luck and welcome aboard. Ask if you need anything, at least one of us on here will get you what you need. All we ask for in return is pictures... we love pictures... I thrive on them... yummy Aquaporn!!!!! lol

I appreciate the welcome fellas. I'll get the pictures right next time sorry.

Well I need a little help  :scratch: . I've started on tearing out the transom and it is not ha goin so well. I can clearly see the wood is rotten but it is completely encapsulated in fiberglass. Then at some point another 1/2 inch ply was added and encapsulated. The fiberglass is very rigid but I have to get the wood out. Is there any easy way or proper way to remove it or is the careful cut/ pry and chisel method the only way?

Cut through the inner skin, from the inside, and use an air chisel to peel it off the outer transom skin.

I cut 1" vertical  strips with a skill saw then used a flatbar pry bar( I would second the air chisel). My transom was still pretty solid except for a couple areas. It took everything that saw had to cut through 1/4"- 3/8" of fiberglass and 2" of plywood. My good friend was a 4" grinder with a 1/8"thin cutoff wheel  to get into tight areas. Just be real careful with no guard this tool can be dangerous but cuts through fiberglass and plywood like no other tool.
