Aquasport 275 or Grady White 272

2000 models--choosing between the two. Any big differences. Understand the Aquasport doesn't have wood in the hull. Sounds like an advantage. Both have the Eurotransom, deep V, WA etc, but any advantage to one over the other for construction, ride, power required, etc. ?? Thanks

Take each for a test ride in the ocean. Try and pick a semi-snotty, similar day. You want some wind, swell etc.

Then take a look at the layouts based on your needs and those of your family, crew, etc.

Next would be condition. Then price. They are all negotiable, and as we like to say around here, cash is king

fp, you brought up a good point in relation to wood free construction.  While not entirely for the 275 (deck sole, gunnels cored with end-grain balsa), there is a WHOLE lot less wood in the AS than the Grady.  Obviously the biggest issue for the Grady would be stringers and transom.  If you're familiar with the GW owners website, greatgrady.com, go over there and poke around.  I've found in the past that the owners on there that have suffered some rotting issues aren't bashful in regards to talking about it...

I have been lurking around the Grady Forum and have read about the rotten wood and the transoms problems. I recall from a few years ago when I was searching that the transom issue came up than. I do like the layout and the amenities of the AS, better than the Grady. AS 275s are few and far between when compared to the Grady inventory and since they didn't show up till 1999 they are more $ for similar configurations. Is the balsa wood subject to soaking up water? Is that an issue in the 275? Thanks

fp, any wood will absorb water and rot if equipment and hardware isn't installed correctly.  Fortunately on the 275, there isn't much in the way of hardware installed in cored areas.  What we did at that time was any larger holes that had to be cut, such as for rod holders in the gunnel, that sort of thing, they were all painted with gelcoat before hardware installation.  Now, some experts out there say that doing that is a step above doing nothing, but there are plenty of late 90s Explorers and Ospreys out there with solid gunnels, so gelling must help somehow...

I've been in the 275 and it is a huge difference from my 230 - the cabin is actually a cabin where in mine it's a place to snuggle.  The only thing I didn't like nor did the owners wife, is the head layout.  There is no room and you have to hang your legs outside the little room or be triple jointed.
Other than that it's a nice big boat.

Thanks for the replies. All things considered I think the 275 is the lower risk of the boats I am considering at the present time.
