Aquasport 230 Seastar helm leaking
« on: December 26, 2013, 09:40:34 PM »
Good day All
I am new to this forum, owner of a 93' Aquasport 230 Explorer,
since a few weeks my Seastar helm is leaking, even when I am not using the boat.
Has anyone experience with replacing the seals?

Thanks.
Martin

Dutch, where is it leaking from?  Around the hose fittings?  The steering shaft?  Sorry, meant to say Martin...welcome aboard!

looks like it leaks from the steering shaft.
did replace the steering fluid beginning of the year.

It's very easy to change the shaft seal. The hardest part is pulling the steering wheel!

The Resource forum is your friend.

Then again you own a "Genmar" hull and after all this is a "Hialeah hull" site or so I've read.

BS aside Dutch, you have the standard helm used on many Aquas and the same as mine. Mine leaked also and the link I posted, while not as in depth as the THT one, should cure your problem rather easily. As Fitz stated, wheel removal may be your highest hurdle. We have details for that also, if needed.

Good luck.

I had the same problem with my Morse steering head,it only leaked when I tipped the console forward.
I have an 85 25' xpress fisherman.
I was going to by a rebuild kit,but because the head was so old,and it took 5 turns starboard and 6 turns port
lock to lock I new there was more wrong than just leaky seals it had a tremendous amount of play
boat was very hard to control,so I just went out and bought a new Teleflex 5272
and new lines. The steering wheel came off with no problem.
In your case I would get a hold of Teleflex and find out how much to have it rebuilt,I was told not more than $250.
I was going to do that with the morse head, but Teleflex said that it wasn't worth it.
Their not that hard to rebuild if you have the right tools and a clean area to work in.
good luck in what ever you do.

Martin,

Do yourself and your patience a huge favor and buy a puller from Harbor Freight or the like before you attempt to remove the steering wheel.  I just replaced my factory wheel on Sat. with a solid stainless one and invested over an hour trying to get the orig steering wheel off..  Let me tell you, it felt like it was welded on there and know amount of pulling or effort was gonna get it to budge.  Once the puller was used it took literally seconds.  Good luck!

Good day all, just to let you know that found the right seal kit and purchased the puller,
replacing all took only 20 minutes and no more leaks.....up to the next project.

Good deal Martin - I have to rebuild the helm for my 170 and also the unit at the motor so I'll be going through this same thing.

So how do you like your 230?  I love mine.  I've had mine for a few years now.
Post up some pics - you can upload pictures of any size to your gallery in the photo gallery and then post them in a topic.  There are instructions (mostly pictures) of how to do this near the top of each forum.
