Mate Series Rod/Cup holders installed :)

Installed 4 Mate Series rod and cup holders this weekend. Can't wait to try them out next week! Install was very easy. Just four 3 1/4" ninety degree hole saw holes. Very easy on the older, thinner layups on my gunwales, but a bit of a bear getting through the new 3/4" solid glass further aft around my new transom! About broke my wrist!
Intersting that my '76 model appears never to have had gunwale mounted rod holders. the least fishy 22-2 ever produced I suppose. Maybe there is a pent up store of fish Karma in her?

did you go with the solid Stainless version or the plastic with the Stainless covers?
I ended up removing my 2nd set of rod holders that were the more forward set because they prevented the use of the top set of under cap rod holders.

These are solid stainless with a black plastic liner in the lower rod holder section.

Evil...and others. When drilling holes of that size, ALWAYS use a drill that has the side hand grip for the left hand (or the other side for you lefties). When those teeth dig into the coring, or when the saw is breaking through the other side, they'll grab and spin that drill in a heatbeat...along with your wrist!!
Worked with a guy at Stamas that actually DID break his wrist that in that exact manner...

looks sharp!
thats interesting though that the "rod" section of the holder is plastic... I thought they were either solid stainless or solid plastic all the way through...
I was thinking of getting 2 for my bow area. definately one of those: "why didnt I think of that" ideas...
good tip Bob, I saw a plumber have that happen to him once- except the handle of the drill kicked and knocked a hole through the drywall of a bathroom... the torque that can build up can really do some damage.

The "rod" section is stainless, but it has a plastic (PVC?) insert. I also bought the stainless backing plates for them. Seems to be a very solid installation, but I'll know better after a few hundred hours of fishing and drinking. Tough duty, but best to get it behind me... :)
