Need inexpensive cushion suggestions?
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:56:24 PM »
I purchased a 1985 170 Osprey and want to bring her back to life a bit.  I would like to put a seat and back cushion for the front storage compartment in front of my center console.  I called a local shop and they wanted $350 for those two cushions, I thought that was ridiculous.  Anyone have any suggestions on a more reasonably priced set of cushions.  Thank You

Go to a local discount fabric place and buy your material and foam, then take it to someone with a 1-man shop and have them make up the cushions.  You only pay for labor - not the material mark-up...

I am not so sure 350 is out of line.
Making you a pair is more expensive than pre made.

I paid 220 for mine on the 222. local shop by Lake Lanier here in GA. I made a pattern and told her what I wanted and a week later picked them up. They turned out really nice. If you want more info post back and let me know.

Having made cushions in my shop it is more time consuming than you would expect.  Also quality foam is VERY expensive.  Usually it can cost more than the fabric itself.  The "marine" vinyl you get at say Joann's fabrics is not very good quality either.  Those two cushions can take a good day to make properly. Figure in the labor costs to pay a skilled sewer, materials, overhead, etc. $350 is not bad depending on what materials they are using.

This and the good quality thread.
I believe it is UV rated, yeah?
I have seen the "deal" products turn to not so much of a deal real fast.

Hey Puff welcome!
I have a 74 196 and what I found was a 68 Quart cooler cushion fit the seat part almost perfect and I believe a 50 quart fit the back. they have been on there for 5 years and I mean stayed thjere for 5 years and am just now replacing them. cost me about $60.00. $350.00 would get you through several years!

Iceman the thread can be VERY expensive.  Some of the high end stuff is over $100 for a small spool of it.... and you need at least two of them!  It kills me when I see nice new boats in the storage yard with no cover on them...  There is this nice (was nice) 20' runabout a few boats down from mine.  Bright yellow and white interior...  I watched it fade and go nasty in hardly a year.  The UV down here just eats that stuff up...  It will cost thousands to reupholster the boat.  Even a cheap $90 walmart cover would have saved it.

Yes, I hear you.
Last year we had my console seat redone.
A friend took his to the same place.
He left saying it was too expensive and he could get a better deal.
FF to now, my same friend asked if I could "call the upholstery guy and have him "fix" my friends poor quality work".
I said no way.

I was thinking for the op.
Maybe a igloo style cooler pad set?
I believe they are electro seemed and are not too bad for the price?

Yep, Igloo produces a quality product at a reasonable price. Bang for the buck, this may be the way to go.

thanks for welcoming me and for all your quality input.  I know I am going to get chewed out for this but I just bought a pair cushions on Ebay for $80.  I know they won't be the same quality as custom cushions but for that price even if they only last two seasons I am ahead of the game.  If you have some time go on ebay and search "boat cushions" they are the ones that are 20" X 12"  2inch foam.  I got two,  seat and back.  let me know what you think.  thanks and everyone have a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. :santa:

Not sure how much time you've been spending on THT, but that's not our style.    We give as much info as we are able so our members can make INFORMED decisions.

The cushions look nice, and for $40 each, it's less than I pay for those CHEAP-@$$ replacment igloo cooler top cushions that barely last me a year.    (I'm on my third set, but can't find an alternative that's the right size without paying through the nose for custom)

Let us know how they perform!
