Loye, the wife is an artist (really, she had stuff in the Winter Park art fair), so I think we have that covered...

There are timing marks on both the dist gear and the flywheel for when you get a belt.

I have the pre '65 factory service manual for it. So we can walk through the set up when the time comes. Whatever you do, don't break the distributor cap! They are gold and crazy expensive. Also looks like she has been opened up for surgery at least once. Looks like old sealer on the crankcase joint (not factory). If this engine was in my shop right now; before I put a penny into it; I would be doing a compression test and be looking for 110-120 psi and go from there. You will be able to find just about every part you need to get it run. Once you get on the site, you will find a bunch of guys that have access to parts for it. But for now, just she if she has a heartbeat in the cylinders.

Is that the old blue book?  I have one of those.  Also an orange one and I think a yellow? one.  Now you have me wandering what all I packed in those boxes years ago  Also have the meters they sent out in a brief case

Yep, it's the blue one; covers 1940-1965 all models. Some of the reading is quite interesting. I would love to get a peek at the meters you are talking about. I'm assuming old Merc-o-tronic stuff. I recently purchased a very old Merc-o-tronic magneto analysizer from 1955 vintage that works perfectly so now I can load test coils and condensers do leakdown and resistance tests. Nobody has this stuff anymore but I would love to get a hold of a Merc-o-tronic service tach; they were state of the art instruments and very accurate.

Well good news gents!!  Virtually identical 118 PSI across all cylinders...well, 5 of them, my compression gauge doesn't have the clearance to get past the lower pan to check the bottom cylinder.  But with the top 5 reporting in excellently, no reason for me to believe the bottom cylinder is going to have issues.

Turned over strong, who knows, if it had gas, may have even started!  The last reg sticker on the boat is '93, it's a good possibility there hasn't been gas through those lines in 20 years...

Just wanted to throw my 0.02 in....
That is a very cool looking engine. CLASSIC. Sah-weet!
What a find!
Glad to hear about the compression test. Luck is definitely working for you so far.

Please!.... video the first attempt of a start. I would enjoy seeing that video here on CAS. I would assume others would feel the same way. If it fires up.   .... Now that would be exciting!
Thanks! And good luck.  :salut:

118 is VERY COOL! I know your partial to the 170 but that would be a GREAT match for a 15 Glen L gentleman's racer!!

Was going to post just the picture but all you gearheads take a look.  There area few V12 Rolls Merlin's that will make you drool.  The racer is about 2/3s down with white and red cowled Mercs..

Dave, that is VERY cool!!  I've studied Glen L's designs and styles over the years.  A wooden boat would be pretty cool, but probably something that I would do a few years down the road.

If you re ever down our way, the Sunnyland Boat show over in Mt. Dora (better known around here as the Mt. Dora wooden boat show) is about as cool as it gets...http://www.woodyboater.com/classic-boat ... l-summary/  I'm particularly partial to Century Arabians... :thumright:  :thumright:
