AH the memories LOL  attach a life line to yourself when you try to pull start that thing in the water

Loye, unless my life depended on it, that ain't never gonna happen!!!

My neighbor was over this aft, we were talking about what boat to put this little jewel on, should she turn out to be a worthwhile endeavor.  I said an Aquasport 17, he says what about this, what about that.  Said nope, a 17.  OK.  The trailer is in good shape, and can probably pick up a 17 hull around Tampa for next to nothing.

Sure would be sweet to see this old girl on a 170, huh?  Very interesting, the motor and I are basically the same age...

17 sounds good. I'd love to see not only pics, but at least a first start video.

Misser, will do.  Have to pick up some fuel hose, probably some fittings as a few fuel lines on the PH going to the fuel pumps are preformed, braided with crimped on ends, and they are rotted as well.  Nothing I didn't expect.  Can probably get by with barbed fittings and hose, unless I wanted to make her "authentic".  No high pressure chit to worry about.  She'll definitely need a set of plug wires and plugs, new timing belt, then to figure out (I'm sure Farley knows the drill) how to set timing.

But you all will get a vid, promise!  You guys know I like to make videos!!  Scary, actually...

Rick, I was on 1 175 Osprey back in the day out of 10th street.  We ran a 135 OMC to see how'd she do.  Beautiful spring day on the bay, and she was in the upper 40s...lotsa fun, but the bay had just a little ripple on it, so just a fast boat ride...

My neighbor knows air conditioning, he only knows a little about boats.  170 it is going to be!

Bob, way back, my neighbor had a 170 with a 90 Yamaha.  He was an excellent fisherman and captain. He would take her 30 miles offshore on a pretty day, and outfish the fleet.

At five miles, he would also outfish the fleet.

He was a legend, and the good fisherman around here still nod their head when he's mentioned.

Fished that 170 like a bat outta hades back then, and still fishes it....and "back then" was 30 years ago.  He loves that boat :salut:

Scotty, my neighbor (Fred) asks me how far out would I take the 170 (or 175 in more "modern" terms).  With a reliable motor, I told him, as far as the "thirds" rule would allow us.  Basically 20 to 30 miles.  In the summer, start heading west at 0600, start heading east at 1030.  In the gulf, we'll be fine.  In the fall, winter, and spring months?  Pick your days.

But I give Fred credit.  Without me mentioning it, he said, "Of course, we'd need a Seatow membership..."  :thumright:  :thumright:

I have the pre '65 factory service manual for it. So we can walk through the set up when the time comes. Whatever you do, don't break the distributor cap! They are gold and crazy expensive. Also looks like she has been opened up for surgery at least once. Looks like old sealer on the crankcase joint (not factory). If this engine was in my shop right now; before I put a penny into it; I would be doing a compression test and be looking for 110-120 psi and go from there. You will be able to find just about every part you need to get it run. Once you get on the site, you will find a bunch of guys that have access to parts for it. But for now, just she if she has a heartbeat in the cylinders.

Yep Farl, that "dripping" of the gasket sealer sure doesn't look "factory".  So hopefully I'll get a compression test done tomorrow, will report back with the #'s.  I don't need fuel line or new plugs/wires to do that... :thumright:

Farl, I'm registered now on the site (John's), so I'll be posting there soon...

Is that the old blue book?  I have one of those.  Also an orange one and I think a yellow? one.  Now you have me wandering what all I packed in those boxes years ago  Also have the meters they sent out in a brief case

Yours still looks in good shape, nothing a couple bottles of nail polish and a steady hand can't fix.

Just thought of something...without a timing belt, can I do a compression check?  Cam won't move, valves won't move.
