Hey Bob,

You started looking inside the distributor yet? You know you can bench test that mag for spark without it being assembled on the engine. I can test the coils and condenser on my Merc-O-Tronic mag tester if you want to send them over. Check the cap for cracks, points etc. You know the drill... I've tried staring at :*: before to see if it would fix itself and in 53 years, I believe I had a seal repair itself by staring at it but thats about it...

Farley,

Yep, I've looked at the dizzy and magneto.  The problem I see with the dizzy cap is deep grooves worn in the contacts from the rotor.  Probably .015".  Really can't see how the motor ran, unless those grooves are supposed to be there from the get go.  I cleans a couple up with a soft wire wheel, nice and shiny bright...but grooves.  Only thing cracked on the cap is one of the wire terminal "sockets" (for lack of a better term), but the plug wire boot covers that completely.  Other than that, in good shape.

Question.  The hose that comes off the cap to a little "containment area" on the front end of the lower pan...is that supposed to act as some sort of vacumn canister?  What it looks like, has 2 barbed fittings going into it...

Want a pic of the dizzy cap?

The tube(s) are just dis vents to keep it cool. Check if there is play in the dis shaft if we have a bad bearing(s) (replacable). Considering that it needs to spin at 5000-6000 rpm, the bearings could be toast and allowing the rotor to come in contact with the cap. There is no indication in the manual that the grooves should be there. Does your cap have two sets of numbers for firing sequence? The inner set of numbers is for the 700. Your engine has a different firing order from other I6's. Is (was) there any brass fines laying in the bottom of the cap? Send pic of cap, inside and outside. Your engine has a 2.875 standard bore that makes it similar to the 4 cylinder 44 cu in (classic 50)- 500 with two additional cylinders. They basically just stacked a 22 cu in 20 hp twin, on top of a 44 cu in 50 HP 4 cylinder to create a 66 cu in 70 hp six. They all used the same pistons! Maybe even the same rods but not completely sure.

Yeah Farley, 2 sets of firing orders.  However, the cap says "For 76 cu. in. engines and larger"...interesting?

I'll post a couple pics in a bit...

Correction, 2 9/16 bore (2.562") and 2 1/8 stroke same as the 20hp and 50hp. I had the bore (2.875) for a 1000 by mistake. So in essense the 3 ring piston and rod was used all the way up to the 1997 classic 40 (old 50hp four cyl). So I have a very nice 1995 4 cyl 40hp 44 cu in. in stock that used the same piston(s) and rod (s) as your 700 from 1962. No one gives a rats ass but I do! So you probably have an engine that will idle down like none-other. We used to take a bic lighter and stand it on top of the cowl, ( 4 cyl 500) start the engine and the lighter would stay standing. The only other engine I've seen that will idle that way is a '54-'64 OMC 3 HP twin!

Here's a pic of the contacts Farley.  The dizzy shaft has WAY more endplay than it should, I'm guessing around .010", which would explain the grooves as the rotor took it's eliptical path...

And here's the engine cu. in. callout...

Yep, The inner set of numbers is for your 66 in engine. At this point, time to chime in on JOMS and start the conversation about the dizzy bearings. http://johnsoldmercurysite.com/phpBB3/v ... =17&t=8207 This guy is looking for 4 cyl dizzy bearings so jump in for the 700 six, probably the same bearings.

That be it, Farley...

Although I'm sure in that pic, the motor wasn't the focus...

Old Hydrostream...That is a boat you had to learn how to drive... I've been 87 mph in a Viper with a 2.4 Merc and it was the hardest drive I ever did. My hands shook for 10 minutes after I climbed out of it.

Sorry Bryan, selling the little 700.  Just don't have the cash to get the parts she needs.  Oh, it's not like "we" don't have the money...it's just that someone around here decides what it gets spent on...like Vitamix's that never get used...and carpet steam cleaners that never get used...and deep fryers that never get used...and convection ovens that never get used...and a $600 serger that never gets used...and a $1000 sewing machine that never gets used...and probably $7500 in craft supplies that never get used...and a $1400 Imac that just gets used to play solitaire...

But a $200 distributor cap and rotor???  WHAT ARE YOU,  NUCKIN PHUTZ???!!!   It's all I can do to scrounge together some resin and glass, and a few cheap pieces of hardware for the little boat.  So we'll see what I can do over the next few months.  Hope to have the little Sea Sprite in the water this summer.  If it has to be with a little 9.9 tiller, so be it...

That would be the old faithful Merc 9.9, Farley...
