how to get log info from 2002 evinrude 175
« on: November 18, 2013, 04:22:01 PM »
I have found a motor that hopefully will suit my needs.

2002 BRP Evinrude 175 with all controls, wiring and prop for $3500.  My understanding is that these engines had most of the big issues sorted out after BRP took over OMC.

The engine has even compression around 115psi.   The seller doen't know how to get the log info.  Can anyone describe that to me?   I'm computer literate so no problem there.  I need to know how to physically connect from a PC laptop and if any special program is needed.

Well if it is still running after 11 years I'm sure your OK. The ones that went POP did so rather quickly.  I assume your just truing to figure out the number of hours on it?

Yes exactly.

I have also read that the check engine light would blink out any codes as long as the error log was not cleared by disconnecting the battery.   I figure if I buy it I'll need to know how to read the log anyway.

I've searched all over but can't find info on diagnostic software or connection method.

There is no software you can buy aftermarket that you can use.  BRP's software is dealer only and the couple of aftermarket programs I know of, you have to buy around $2500 worth of kit.  Take it to a dealer and he can download and print everything out.  Usually only cost 1-1 1/2 hrs labor.  Unless there is some pirated software somewhere, but you still have to buy the cable.

That's going to be hard, when the engine for sale is on a boat (not for sale) at a non-dealer seller that doesn't have any idea how to get the log info.  I'd have to drag the whole boat halfway across CT to a dealer and drag it back afterward.

There has to be a way for end users to read the log.

Is the boat and motor near you?

There is a BRP dealer in East Haven.

No.  The motor is on a damaged boat in Plainville, CT.  30+ miles away from east haven.  There's a dealer in Hartford that's only 20 miles away. I may call to see if they can go survey it and get the info.

I have a bmw bike I can hook a laptop up to and read AND reset the codes.  This should be available to outboard users.

In theory yes, in reality no.  BRP, Zuke, and Merc all have their software available ONLY to dealers and OEMs.

OK thanks.

If I can't read the log / codes, I'm pretty much left with hearing it start and run on watermuffs, and evaluating it based on general cleanliness and the seller's comments about it.

Anyone have any other ideas on how to evaluate this?  I've read about everything I think I can on which models are problems and which are generally ok.  This should be a good edition of this engine.  I just want to do my due diligence.

I did call a dealer and they won't do remote site visits.

On that motor, comp test, ck gearlube, if you have a spark card, ck ignition, if gauges work, ck volts key on and after it runs for a little while to ck charge system.  The problem with a V-6 on a hose is it's hard to tell if a cyl is dead while running.  On an ETEC/Ficht you CAN NOT disconnect an injector or pull a plug wire with out the possibility of scrambling the EMM.

02 models were good, BRP already had most of the bugs left over from the Fichts taken care of.  Biggest issue then was the pinion gear letting go on flats/bass style boats.

Good luck, too bad the dealer won't make a house call.

In theory yes, in reality no.  BRP, Zuke, and Merc all have their software available ONLY to dealers and OEMs.

Well........
I spoke with an Evinrude Dealer (E-Tec) that sells the software and cabling but......
Unless you have the Dealer authorization code(s) you can only "view" (read only) the engine logs/error codes etc.

As one can imagine, it is expensive ($600+) for both but......
Still, it's software/hardware available to non-dealers like yourself. Read only is the drawback if you purchase an engine but at least you know the history.

If you are looking to re-power with a BRP product from 1999-present, this may help as you search for the "dream engine".

http://www.bluewaterboat.com/software_ficht_etec.htm

This may help (if you haven't seen already) if you get the software.

Lastly, if you're really computer literate, crack codes are often just a search away,
I'm just sayin'

Good luck. :thumleft:

Thanks Capt Bob!

The one for my bike was $300 so the Evinrude setup isn't all that unreasonable.  But I'll probably just go with my gut after running this one and get it to a dealer before it goes on the boat so they can check it over for problems.  Probably worth a 2 hr diagnostic charge.  Then I'll consider whether to get the software/hardware or not as part of having some of the diagnostic tools on hand to fix it.

The links are very much appreciated.

My pleasure Kevin.

When I spoke to the gentleman at Bluewater he suggested you offer the Dealer (for your engine log readout) a C note. He stated it wouldn't be the first time his outfit did it for a prospective buyer. The software would be well worth the cost if it allowed setting and resetting codes.

Good luck with the hunt. :thumleft:

Well I got the outboard.

I was able to trade in my 1986 175 and the place I got the engine from was able to do the basic swap (remove old one, hang the new one).   I had agreed verbally (and the ad said) to get all the rigging with the engine.  But I arrived to pick up the boat and not only was the full harness , key switch and oil tank not there, but the harness section that plugs into the engine was cut about 4 ft out from the connectors.  So they destroyed it to expedite removing it from the boat it was on.   I doubt they will make that right and I'm willing to just move on.

So I need the boat side of the harness, the key switch, and the gauges, and an oil tank for a 2002 Ficht Ram 175 Evinrude.

I've looked at some of the parts sites but I don't see any of those parts listed.   Can anyone suggest sources?

Kevin, that just plain sucks!!  But, enough about that, if you're willing to move on, so are we.

Now the good news is that the rigging for a Ficht is identical to the rigging for a regular old OMC 175 (just like Lewis has on his 22-2).  A good place to start is Great Lakes Skipper, they have a ton of OMC stuff, here's an example, a 17' OMC harness that works on your motor...http://greatlakesskipper.com/omc-evinru ... ng-harness  Search the site, you'll find all you need there from a rigging standpoint.

You can also try OUR old favorite, Marine Connection Liquidators (here on referred to as MCL), guaranty you they have what you need, most likely quite a bit cheaper.  I just used GLS as an example so you could actually see the rigging.  I've bought a lot of stuff from GLS, particularly the newer, NMEA 2K type of part.  Contact MCL, they'll help you out...http://www.themarineconnection.net/
