I heard nida Core will not be available after dec 31?
« on: October 26, 2013, 04:54:39 PM »
I heard from a reputable source that for no logical reason, 3M is going stop making Nida products after the new year. 3M bought them about 3 years ago and for no logical reason is shutting it down. Of course, check it out for yourself as this is word of mouth from a reputable source, but I figured I would share in case it is fact true.

I hope that's not true.  If it is, I guess I will need to get enough to finish my project before the supply house runs out.  I would hate to run out halfway through and have to find something dimensionally equivalent.

Plasticore is functionally the same product as Nidacore. They utilize cylinder shaped plastic extrusions between the scrim rather than honeycomb, but it is comparable in terms of strength, weight and cost.

Good to see you posting again, Eugene!  Do you know if the plasticore is dimensionally the same as nida core?  I have about 1/2 the nida core sheets I'm going to need to finish my deck.  I plan to get the remainder in December, but if I can't for some reason, are the thicknesses the same?

Nidacore comes in 4x7 sheets. I'm not sure about Plasticore, but it is easy to cut with a razor knife and straightedge. Thicknesses are the same. 1/4" to 1.5".

I think the Plascore is a little easier to work with actually, it has more cells for a given area than the Nida so the edges stay cleaner.     Nida is only a few miles from me, I used to go there and dumpster dive scratch n dent materials. Might keep an eye on their "discontinuing" and see if I can snag some leftovers  8)

I talked with the guy at  Fiberglass coatings in ST Pete. He said 3m stop making it. But the guy who made the original Nada core bought the company back and is going to continue to manufacture them. But the price is going to increase.
