Gunwale Caps, Coaming Boards, Gunwale Boards (Replacement?)
« on: October 14, 2013, 06:48:51 PM »
So I've been searching and searching and have found many posts about the gunwale caps, boards, coaming boards, whatever they're called (seem to have many names). What I'm talking about are these (wood on gunwale):

I'm not positive what mine are made out of, but I know that they have a couple strong stress cracks on the edges and desperately need to be replaced. Does anyone know where any replacements can be found? Obviously they can be made, but my lack of space is really hurting me at the moment. Would anyone be interested in making a pair?

Any insight would be great!

Those are teak, a good local cabinet shop should be able to duplicate them for you pretty easily, although I'd suggest mahogany to keep costs down a bit (I think mahogany is cheaper than teak... ).  Just remove them and the rod racks below, they can duplicate pretty easily...

Mole the prices of both teak and mahogany are pretty stupid at this point....  Could you post a pic of the offending area?  It may be possible to do a nice scarph patch depending on the location and it would be WAY cheaper.

Last checked teak was over $20 per board foot...

Great point db....if the color/grain is close, and aligned properly....good to go. And the way the grain rises on teak...the blend should get even better over time.

Depending on the pics.....the new area could be splined in, even better.

Sorry guys I wasn't clear. That photo isn't my boat, but a detailed shot of what I was asking about. Mine are in poor shape and painted white. I'll take some photos tomorrow.

My 2 cents, if it was me I would re-make them out of Starboard and never worry about them again, boats are enough work as it is, keeping up with wood trim just adds to it :salut:

I agree Circle Hooked. That's my ultimate goal unless I can find someone to make them out of mahogany. I would make them myself, but like I said my space is limited. The boat is in a slip and I live in a high rise so it's pretty difficult to construct a wood shop around here. I do my best.

On my 222 FF I replaced the teak with 3/4" Starboard.
Did it 5 or 6 years ago..great stuff !
Only mistake I made was going with black, it warps when it gets the hot sun on it, but seeing how I be up here in the  Pacific NW I don't have  many days of hot sun.

X2 on Starboard replacement, I did that on my previous boat, the Chris Craft Scorpion.  Used the 1/2 inch starboard with non-skid pattern on the one side.  Looked great, zero Maintenance, and easy to work with.

Wow guys great stuff on here. Again I would love to have mine replaced with starboard, maybe I can hire one of y'all to hook me up with the top cap for a small fee  :compress: ??

Anyways here are some photos of what I'm working with. Now that I really look at them they are not terrible, but I don't like the crack that has formed, probably by someone sitting on the side or stepping on it getting off. Just isn't too appealing and actually has some play in it as well.

I'm also missing the rod holders as you can see. If anyone has the template, please let me know!
