Wet Phone
« on: September 22, 2013, 12:55:50 AM »
What a nice day. Dropped the cell phone in the whizzer first thing this morning.

Tried to dry it out, but seems to be toast. After the fact, went to e-how....had I followed their advice it may have been salvageable.

1. Remove batt and memory chip, shake out excess water, blot with towels, t-paper, etc. Shake again, blot again.

2. Open it up, lay flat with batt chamber pointing up. Affix a shop vac hose to the batt chamber. Turn on the vac and let run for 30 minutes. No hair dryer, no lights, no heat....vacuum only.

3. Place in bag of dry white rice....or absorbent silica gel....let stand 24 hours, absorbing all  moisture.

4. Take phone to batt store and test with new batt. If powers up, buy batt. If not....you're potentially out two cups of rice.

Ooops!     I've known a couple folks whose phones have survived dunking, but most don't.  Sounds like it may be new phone time for Scott!

Well, at least the water was clean

The phone was on the counter, I was in the shower, the towel was on the counter. I didn't have my glasses on and when I got out I grabbed the towel and ker-plunk went the phone

Its toast. It was a dumb phone....maybe I'll get a smart phone, everyone gives me chit about not having one anyway. But I have enough addictions without banging my thumbs on that thing like you see folks do in the airports, restaurants, etc

If you do get an iPhone, buy the insurance, with my wife and 3 daughters it is well worth it.
Couple of weeks ago, my youngest broke her iPad, had insurance on it.
paid 49.00 was handed a new one.
I used to not purchase the insurance plans, lately it has saved us more than once.

At my Dad's place in Maui, took a few days off and came over.
I leave here today, I wont be back till January, my dads 83rd B day.
Hard to leave this place.
Here is a shot from this morning.

I got the Lifeproof case on my IPhone
They are nice, once you get past trying to plug in the charger.

Get a Casio Commando Mil-spec phone from Verizon.  No clumsy cases needed...  I use mine in the shower, out on the sandbar.... in the water....  on the boat....  out in the rain.... no problem

The Commando was my first smart phone.  Because it was my first, it was amazing to me.  It was only after my wife got a new Smart Phone that I realized that the Commando was built like a tank and about as slow as one too.  It froze on me more than I liked.  It was pretty tough though, it stood up well to most anything I subjected it to.  It seemed to handle being splashed with water, but I wouldn't recommend submerging it.  My old Commando got knocked into a hot tub briefly, and it was done after that.  The insurance company kept sending me refurbs, and they all had some issue out of the box.  It was a good phone before it went for a swim.

If you don't want to crossover into smart phones, Casio makes another tough phone called the "Ravine".

I just got a new Motorola smart phone from Verizon - great battery life and does apps really well.  Much better than my old Blackberry...   Go to the cell phone store and talk with one of the 20-somethings and let them tell you all the features - then pick the one that fits your usage (it may not be the same at the 20-something)...
