stringer dilema in my 1987 200
« on: September 18, 2013, 02:10:04 PM »
so the transom is ripped out.  turns out the fiberglass guy has had the boat outside uncovers in the rain for the past 2 weeks.  believe it or not, the stringer were bone dry when he got the old transom doug out.  now they are wet and kinda saturated at least at the ends there.  is my best choice to kind a dry place to park and let it sit and dry or rip out the west stuff from the back and replace with new foam?  i dont think itll be more than a foot or so in.  but i dont know how that will affect the integrity of the stringers being so close to the transom.  needless to say, im not happy.  its taking way too long and he is screwing up my boat.  i feel like i need to babysit now.

That stinks. I know how you feel, I would think as long as you dry it out before you glass it in it should be fine.  And yes I would keep a close eye on your boat. I have seen a shop do some questionable work because the owner didn't know and the floor hid the work. good luck

we had a nice little talk yesterday.  meeting with him saturday to see how bad it is and how to fix it.  i can imagine it too far in as the boat is tipped up pretty good.  finally have some sun today and the rain is supposed to slow down.  ill see how it looks saturday.

I would think if its tilted properly and had enough time the water should run back out. I dont think that foam has a capilary action like wood where it would draw it in deeper. Your at a crossroads because gutting the stringers means redoing the floor. You can also drill small test holes at the base of the stringer at where the stringer meets the hull to see if water comes out. If all is good just glass them over with a small patch.

the stringers are in fact dry.  drill a couple 1/2" holes at the basses and a 3" hole is each half way up.  dry.  only the very back.  the foam is exposed before the transom as been removed.  it would be easy to dig out 6" to a foot from there and refill.  i think itll dry out if we got 2-3 days without rain.  epoxy it shut and be done with it.
