Hole repair advice
« on: August 23, 2013, 10:38:41 PM »
My project boat has several holes that need to be patched.  Most are about 1" diameter where fittings were previously installed.  They are all above the water line with clear access to both sides.  I've found several online instructions, but many give conflicting information.  For example, some (most) say to sand a 12:1 bevel around the hole on the outside.  Some say to do it on the inside.  Some say both sides.  Some only go deep enough so that 2 layers of matt or glass is enough to fill it to the surface, and in this case the hole would first be filled with plug of thickened resin.  Some say to bevel the entire thickness.  And then some say to patch the beveled area with gradually increasing diameters of glass, while others say to use gradually decreasing diameters.

What have you experienced guys done that has worked well and stood the test of time?

(Sorry if this has been addressed before - my searches came up empty)

Access to both sides?    Go ahead and bevel both sides.  Cut concentric circles of glass, I like to start big and work out to small and lay up both sides together.       Wont be much fairing if the overlaps aren't too small...

Great - that's exactly how I did the first hole yesterday.  Then I started to second guess myself.  I appreciate the feedback!
