What's the difference
« on: June 13, 2006, 06:22:04 AM »
I searched but didn't find what I thought was the answer - What is the difference between an Osprey and a CCP?  Both are center console.

I think that they are different layouts. The osprey is shallower and has a casting deck while the CCP is much deeper and has a level deck with a coffin box.

They don\'t build \'em like they used to.

I'd like to know as well as I have the Osprey 222, and even from the outside, I can see that the tops of the gunwales are different for starters, and from what I have learned on here, there is no casting deck in the bow, could someone please fill us in?

I'm pretty sure the CCP has more deadrise and therefore a deeper draft but a better ride offshore.

I'm not 100% positive on this though.

Kaczki I think you're on to something:

The osprey seems to be the shallow water version; low sides, casting platform, no freeboard and no splashwell in the aft on older models.  Not sure when they started to offer closed transoms on these.  Mine is definitely not.

The CCP ushered in the era of high sides, huge fishbox, higher freeboard or some splashwell type in the aft and the offshore style/safety.

Must be it.  Good eye.

PS: Miquel, I downsized/used your scans, hope you don't mind (didn't affect your originals)

Osprey vs. CCP
« Reply #6 on: June 14, 2006, 05:22:25 PM »
Ospreys are the original design, with a modified-V (12 degree deadrise), usually an open stern/transom, and a raised platform in the front.  CCPs have a very different liner that raises the gunwales, a deep-V (20 degree deadrise), a closed stern/transom, and a flat floor to the bow - with an anchor locker in the nose.  CCPs also came with two batteries in boxes in the stern area.  Both are self-bailing, but the liner on the CCP comes up before the transom, with a drain that goes out the sides.

Comparing the late 70s and early 80s Osprey (22-2, and later 222) with her 22-2CCP and later 222CCP sister, you notice the following:
- Length is the same at 22'2"
- Draft is 9" for the Osprey, 10" for the CCP
- Weight is 1800 for the Osprey, 2200 for the CCP
- Max HP is 230 for the Osprey, 245 for the CCP
- Fuel capacity is 70 for the Osprey, 85 for the CCP
- Ospreys had a cooler/seat in front of the console; CCPs had the famous "coffin" with one large and one smaller fish boxes, and a built-in livewell in the stern area.
- Many Ospreys were delivered with bow rails mounted on the gunwales; CCPs have a railing installed in a recess in the liner top on both sides.

By the way, the designation from 22-2 to 222 happened with the 1981 model year.  1980 and earlier was 22-2; 1981 and later was 222.

Reading that brochure makes it sound like before '80, they didn't have a name? "..the open fishing boat.." and it looks like the first year built has moved back a bit "...nearly nineteen years ago."  Anyway, the CCP's gunnels are thigh high vs the Osprey's knee high. Wait, on the top brochure, the bottom right pic - is that an Osprey?  Something's fishy around here

Thanks again, 1000X over for this thread too!  I so dig the brochures and I sit in my office here and read them over and over and take in the photos in them as well.

I am sure I won't find this anywhere else on the web but here, what a true treasure.

As it is, I will be leaving tonight to spend some time with my beloved 222 this weekend, it has been three weeks since I've boarded her and taken her out, she must miss me too.

Brochure
« Reply #10 on: June 15, 2006, 11:47:50 AM »
Hey Jim:  I think your brochure is a 1981 Model Year brochure.  It would have been copyrighted in 1980.  Check the back cover and see if it does not have a 1980 copyright.  As far as I know, AS did not do a fancy brochure for the 1980 model year.  The boats did not really change much from 77-80, but in 1981 the CCPs had a new instrument setup.

OK, I think it's time now to go make some waves and catch some fish!  You can find me on the water...

Also don't confuse the 22.2 for the 222.  The 22.2 was the modified V, while the 222 was a deep vee. That was the primary difference.
