gallons of awlgrip and how many coats?
« on: July 16, 2013, 07:54:22 PM »
How many gallons of awlgrip should be expected when painting the boat (67 222 exterior only). How many coats? Is there any benefit to applying an extra couple coats to build up the mils? My thoughts are it wont make the paint any harder and if it chips its just going to be a deeper chip.

Could use some input from some knowledgeable paint guys.

It was about a half gallon mixed to do the hullsides (chine up) if I remember correctly. (I resprayed just the hullsides because I wasn't happy with the first goround when I did her upside down).

That's 3 coats...

Used less than a half gallon on my hull sides. It got what I call a two-beer spray job. Spray the first coat, drink a beer. Spray the second coat, drink a beer. Spray the third and final coat.  :thumright:

I don’t know if others feel the same way I do, but I think the better sanding job you do, the fewer coats of paint you need. I sand a lot with 420 before spraying the first coat. I let that harden. Then sand again with 420 to 600. Then clean and spray the second  and then the third coat. Some times even a forth. Doing that on my 22 took ¾’s of a gallon on my hull sides.

So everyone keeps saying on your hull sides, none of you sprayed the entire hull in awlgrip? If not what did you paint the lower portion with or are you still on the org gelcoat?

I did the entire hull in one shot upside down. (resprayed hullsides only down the road because I wasn't happy with the first round).

Id say around a gallon or more for the whole deal...

Working the hull upside down is the way to go. Standing up is a lot easier than on your back.

Prepping the hull bottom/shooting gelcoat will be much easier too....Gravity works FOR you, rather than against you.

Hindsight is 20/20  .....wish we had flipped her. Would have been saved a lot of labor...the work would have been easier too.

Hull bottom on mine was done with 1 coat ultralux primer(silver), then 3 coats ultrslux bottom paint(Hatteras white, more a light biege) when the time comes to repaint it will be stripped down to the original gelcoat and repainted white.  It doesn't sit in the water when not in use. Upside down would definatly be the best way to do it, :thumright:  mine will probably be on stands, which puts me on my back  , but keeps me from having to strip the boat down(t-top, console ,wiring, engine, seat) :thumright:
