We had 108 that day, filled both fish wells to the point I could close the lids.

I bet if you popped them you could have fit about 432!  Those are some awesome pics!  I grew up in the Toms River area...caught an occasional blowfish, but never saw numbers like that  !  Do you need to clean them a special way due to a poison gland or something like that?

People keeep telling me they're posionous but I'm still here LOL.  They're actual very easy to clean and you end up with a piece of fish that resembles a drumstick. Unfortunately for me, my wife refuses to eat them with the bone in them. So I get to fillet each one and end up with a pile of fish sticks.

Mini-season 2013

Day one limit.  Finished by 7  :drunken: and that was AFTER taking some time to find a few bigger ones to cull the small guys!

5-6' croc at the filet table.  AWESOME!  He's never been there before but the neighbors started seeing him over the last few weeks.  Sure enough, he graced us with his attention at least three separate times.  Hope he hangs for a while!  Such cool animals.   8)

Day one afternoon fishing trip to the islamorada hump.  Left the dock a bit after two, returned by 5:30.  Left fish in the water b/c I didn't want to be stuck fileting until midnight.  They just wouldn't leave us alone.

Day two limit.  Done by 8:30 am.  Earliest day two finish in ten years.  Either we just got REAL lucky this year, or the upper keys were LOADED.  Normally we have to check a couple dozen spots that have already been hit by other fisherman, sift through the shorts, and measure all the barely legal lobster we find. This year, we could eyeball all of them b/c the were obviously keepers, and every single one of the spots we checked had at least a half dozen on it.   :pirat:

Dang Ryan, that is a hell of a few days results!!! Next year we are planning to tow back to Marathon and see if we can come close to that. I doubt we will, but we will try.

Here is what has been going on in northern FL. My friend Kyle was fishing for kings and had the following hookup and release off the Navarre pier.
He is a tall guy, so watch how he just holds the rod up and goes right over people.

Well done Ryan. :thumright:

I've seen the crocs in Key Largo but not that far south (Islamorada). They must be expanding their habitat.

Thanks guys!  This was the type of trip that is the definition of what keeps you fishing after a long string of skunked outings.  Was the best of all the mini-season trips I've had.  Absolutely mind-blowing, but after failing to bring a single fish home for dinner the last NINE trips out   , I feel like it was well earned.  :eye:

Bob - I used to work for the University of Florida and do nighttime research working with these critters.  VERY cool animals.  They've periodically been seen as far south as KW, but usually not beyond marathon, and even then it's usually only the big 'uns.  I was excited to see this smaller guy/gal as far south as MM90!  They're fish eaters and truly nowhere NEAR as dangerous as gators, and it's always neat to see endangered species, though I think they will be de-listed soon if they haven't been already.  Population is stable thanks to prohibited development in Everglades Nat'l Park, perhaps even increasing a tiny bit.

Lew - that was a cool vid!  Thanks for sharing.  I know diddly about pier fishing and I honestly was getting worried that the fish wouldn't handle the rope rides well, but seeing it kick so strong after being put back in the water made me feel MUCH better!    They're a bit hardier than I thought. lol  The local population is definitely not hurting though.  Our local sport fishing dock targets them in 300-350 feet of water and probably catches 3-6 per week!  Check out cyberangler.com and look at the fort lauderdale fishing reports.

Ryan,

Been drooling all day long looking at those tails

24 big tails...up here Florida rock lobster tails would bring 15 bucks each at the fishmonger.  Sheer speculation though, they're never available here :(

Add in a hundred pound box of dolphin....you guys had two huge days :thumright:

As you said...

"The charm of fishing is what is elusive, but attainable...a perpetual series of occasions for hope."

Good deal! Really happy for you and your crew :thumright:

Looks like it may be time to fire up the smoke house
The humpies...pink Salmon.... have been invading our rivers by the millions for a few weeks now
Got a chance yesterday to get out with my bud Dave in his sled and slay a few.
Humpies ain't the best table fare, but make for great smokers if they are still bright

There's one nice Coho Salmon in this mess somewhere

Like I have said before.....
Damn I luv this time of year !!
