How do you lock your console?

I was wondering what you guys used to lock your consoles?
I have the regular/original console and have been debating put a locking twist/compression latch on the top middle of the front seat/lid of the console and then having a cushion that has the cut out along the top to allow use.
On the helm side of the console I have a slam latch that I might convert to a locking latch also. I dont keep anything in there but I have my battery charger and 2 batteries and have left my boat at the marina overnight or on a canal for a weekend before and I'd like to have some security.

i was also thinking- just a locking latch on the helm side and then on the inside/backside of the front door- a sliding lock or something like that.

opinions or ideas....

I've gone back and forth in my mind on this one.  If a thief wants stuff, he's going to get it.  If you don't keep valuables in there, the cost of repairing what he breaks to get in will far outweigh the cost of replacing what he does take.  On the other hand, it may deter a "casual" thief.

A number of years ago I visited my sister in Ft. Lauderdale.  I had a soft top jeep wrangler with the plastic windows.  Silly me, I locked the doors and didn't really have anything of value inside.  Next morning I found a window slashed open and my console ransacked, but nothing missing.  The replacement upper door half was almost $200.

I'm curious to see what others think....

If a thief doesn't see anything but dash mounted brackets when he's eye-balling the boat, and he knows ANYTHING about boats, he'll make the assumption that the owner has the head units in safe keeping.  If he THINKS they're in the console, and he tries the door and finds it's locked, he'll move on...especially when he doesn't know exactly what the head units are.  Why take the time and risk being caught if the prize for his efforts is a 6 year old Garmin that has a resale value of $50?  As far as other equipment, well it takes tools to remove things like battery chargers and amps, they are not easy to get at (insides of consoles are not fun to be working in, trust me I know!), and once again what he can get for them.  You also won't find many thieves hopping off boats with 50 lb group 24s or 65-70 lb group 29s/31s...

Remember, thieves are lazy.  That's why they steal, because work is too hard.

like what bob said, i dont keep anything of value on the boat. thieves want to grab and go. even if you leave a $20 walmart rod and reel, they'll steal it for 5 bucks. only thing of value i did keep on the boat is a spare stainless prop... ask bob, even my radio was removable...

we dont even keep anything of value in our searay

what kind of latch or handle do you all use on the front lid to your console then? all my original hardware is either broken or removed.

Only thing under my console is the batteries and like seabob said they aren't that easy to runaway with :shock: , but like others a thief will steal what he wants, and a lock is only good for keeping a honest man out :salut: ..that being said my overhead electronics box has a stainless lock on it that is keyed..the only thing left in at all times are the VHF and the cheap stereo...it would take me 15 to 20 minutes to get them out and I put them in and that would be cutting wires to do that.. they are mounted on starboard and the starboard is screwed thru the fiberglass on 3 sides, 1 being the top which you can't see the screws..You could tie a pitbull to the leaning post and let people take their chances  :lol: Then again my boat doesn't stay anywhere that I'm not...no storage lots or such.. :thumright:

The CCPs have doors/hatches with lockable hasps on them and I use little brass padlocks on mine.  The locks could be easily defeated, but as others have said - you don't see anything there and most thieves will simply move on to an easier target.  I take the head unit off and even store rods and reels under the deck when I'm gone.  "Nothing too see here - move on..."    :thumleft:

My $.02 is that if you cover your boat you make it a hassle for them to even bother.  What they don't see doesn't tempt them.
I don't keep much on the boats but I bet the chairs in the back are worth quite a bit to a thief (I paid quite a bit) but if he can't see them he doesn't know they are there.

Wow, I dont lock up anything at all.
I have all my equipment on the boat at the dock.
I even leave my rods overnight sometimes.
I dont even think about it.
Never been ripped off ,
maybe just dumb?
