Ignition switch. want one without the tether

my Ignition switch has a tether and its constantly popping off and killing my motor. i bought a new tether and it didnt help. the switch has a ring that holds the tether on and its worn. its really annoying.
I want one without the tether. can i just wire up one like this:

im really good at holding on and i never boat alone so im not worried about killing the engine if i go OB.
also, will i need to do something to change it because its not going to have a tether/kill switch?

Myself?  I'd get a replacement OMC switch that will keep the lanyard in place.  What we say when we sit behind a keyboard and what really happens when the chit hits the fan are 2 different things...

You can run your boat without the tether.  Just start your motor without the tether attached and it will run like that.  You may want to consider just getting a replacement OMC ignition switch.  That way you can run the tether when your out alone in nasty conditions.  No one plans on getting tossed over... but it happens.  Just ask these guys: http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/news/article.html/content/news/articles/bn9/2013/6/17/boater_falls_overboa.html  

I have a 170 but I don't usually run with tether attached to me.  But if the waves look funky or if I'm flying solo I have it there ready to attach to myself.  I can see that it would be real easy to get tossed overboard.

I never trieed to start it without the tether.i just know it always pops off...cool.

It's set up like that in case you somehow lose your lanyard while at sea.  It enables you to start back up and run home without the lanyard.

Yep - they will run without the tether.
Although I started using my tether again when going out alone with the kids. Scary to think what would happen if we hit a rogue wave and I fell off the boat and the kids are still on it headed out toward Spain....

I just replaced my ignition switch.. Very easy install as mine was starting to fail in several areas
causing problems with starting and gauges.  In addition, my key was so loose it would
fall out when seas got a little bumpy.  The kicker was the incident that is linked above where two
guys were tossed out of the boat here in the Tampa area.  I like having a working lanyard now in the
event I am out alone or with my young son.  It's just too easy of a swap and a cheap part not to replace. Plus you get a new key and spare. :)
