Need a new sender unit for fuel tank
« on: June 12, 2013, 11:47:01 PM »
I was at the fuel dock today, needed my tank cleaned out / polished.
We found a couple of issues on the sender unit.
One, someone "glued" the terminal to the unit.
Two, the gears on the unit are not lining up.
I would like to purchase a new sender and install.
I am having a little trouble finding the same.
This one has a manual read gauge dial on the top.
It also has a electrical sending unit for my Yamaha gauge.

Here are a couple of photos of what I am looking for.

Top is a gauge like this http://www.moellermarine.com/sites/moel ... -72dpi.jpg

Thanks as always

Bryan,

Don't mess with another armiture style replacement gauge.  Spend a few $ extra and just get the WEMA equivalent.  Measure the depth of your tank with a simple ruler through the hole where you removed the old gauge, subtract an inch, and that's what I'd order for a replacment WEMA sender.  SB probably has about as much experience with this as any, but I don't imagine you can go too wrong with the WEMA.  :salut:

I need to replace mine as well.  But I was thinking, would it be better to replace with a fuel flow meter?

Thanks Lewis.
So mine would be the standard SAE 5 hole?

Thanks Bryan

The type of tank you have, plastic or metal, will dictate the length of the WEMA sender you will need.  I would recommend visiting their site for instructions.   I am definitely in the minority, as I hate my WEMA sender. Not comfortable with the accuracy of the WEMA sender, which is a horrible feeling as the Captain. If I had to do it again I would have replaced with the same sender. Next step for me is a flo-scan.

Fernando - I must ask for my own edification.    What about your WEMA gauge makes you feel it is inaccurate or not trustworthy?

The readings bounce all around, half tank, E, quarter tank, provides no confidence. I only replaced the sender because I replaced the console and had the fuel cell door up and thought that after nine years it was best I replace the sender. With the old sender I was always comfortable with my fuel gauge, now not so much.

Interesting....Thanks for clarifying.  That's certainly not quality performance.

I replaced my old sender with a WEMA one about a year ago.. Although it works fine it does seem to be effected by the attitude of the boat a little more that I would hope.  It always reads a little on the full side when I am accelerating or not on a plane. That may be due to the fact that I don't completely fill my 142 gallon tank very often and the way the tank its shaped may increase the movement of the float during the previously mentioned conditions.   Besides the boat's change in attitude it works fine.  A plus...  It has less failure points vs. some of the others with swinging arms and the like.

OK, pulled the sending unit this afternoon.
I measured 18 1/2 inches to the top of the tank.
So going by what I am told, I need a 17 inch sending unit, yeah?

Thanks very much

From their FAQs on their website:
Q: How do I determine the length of the sender I need?
For Fuel/Water senders, the length should be 1" less than the depth of the tank if tank is plastic, and 0.5" less than the depth of the tank if tank is metal. This is to account for possible tank flex.

My question is...

Is the pattern on the Aquasport the Standard SAE 5 hole pattern?
