Lost my Oil Pan at 4500 RPM
« on: May 22, 2013, 01:57:54 PM »
Running along at about 45 MPH thru St Joseph Sound, started losing a little speed, checked the gauges......no oil pressure. Dropped the throttle, turned the key off.....checked the dip stick......no oil.    Add 3 quarts, it just starts registering on the dip stick, try turning it over......she is turning over hard, sit down, drink 2 beers  .....call Boat US for a tow. While I am waiting I check the oil again.....empty again    Stand on my head to look under the motor....FOUND MY OIL    its in the bilge, all 8 quarts of it :?  :? Sit back down and drink 2 more beers, Boat US shows up pretty quick and back to dock, once at home, I drain my oil from the Bilge plug  and with flashlight and mirror in hand I find the rusted thru holes in the bottom of the pan. Sit down and drink more beer. :drunken:  :drunken: Sitting there drinking and reminiscing over the last few hours and beer, I have come to the conclusion that I should have never topped off my oil that morning......the extra weight ruined my oil pan

That was almost 2 weeks ago now, this is why I have been a little quiet recently. Currently the motor is sitting in my garage, upside down, waiting for the Crank kit, oil pump, new pan and gaskets. Which should be in today. I can work on my own engines, but had never had to remove one from a boat as big as this WC 248 Sportsman. For a bit I was lost, but I found a little marina locally that if I took everything apart, they would pull the engine with their forklift for 35 bucks out, 35 bucks back in     Trying to get her done by the Holiday weekend, but I don't think I am going to make it.

Sorry to hear it, that sucks.  I've seen it before though, thats the bad part about those oil pans in the bilge, the paint hides the corrosion, and they rot from within, my neighbor almost met the same fate, but discovered it while trying to get the drain plug out, almost ripped the whole drain plug insert out of the rotted pan.

Ah, the joys of owning an I/O or I/B.  Might want to coat that new pan in epoxy, Paul!  And while you've got the motor out, might as well throw a new bilge pump and float down in there...

That sucks Paul.  That boat would have been a good one to camp with us up at CR.

I have the one piece rear seal, if thats the design pan you have I would be interested. I looked at new aluminum ones and didn't fit my wallet

Far as I know Bryan, both Merc and Volvo use stamped steel oil pans.  Of course you can buy aftermarket aluminum or SS, but out of the factory?  Steel.  And as Paul said, up there in $$...

yea, but you have different issues with both....I was very suprised how easy it was to remove the motor, had it ready to pull out in a hour time. All maintenance items hard or impossible to do while engine is in will be done for sure

yea, I had already decided to run the boat to CR next time, or whereever, fuel and cost would be about the same....I have the 300 HP Gen+ motor that has the Bravo III drive....it will sip fuel at cruise speed, 27mph and 5-6 gallon per hour. WOT is 52mph....and watch the fuel guage drift south  boat weighs around 5000 loaded

yea, when I first got the boat I didn't believe the PO, but he was right....I guess its all in the combination of proper equipment.....I'll put 30 bucks in, cruze 1/2 hour out to the reef, fish and then come back and swear I didn't use it all.....I like it
