2000 175 osprey project
« on: May 21, 2013, 12:30:09 AM »
Hello everyone! I recently became a fan of the site because I was getting this boat handed to me. There is a ridiculous amount of information here. Anyway, like I said, my father got tired of his boat sitting in the back yard and finally pased the torch. Ive ben asking to take it off his hands since 2006. It has not been ran since 2005/6 but he has bumped the engine every once in a blue moon. Thank god its been under a pole barn so the sun has not really got to it.

Upon first inspection, there is about 15lbs of leafs and dirt inside it. The tires are dry-rotted, battery dead, hasnt been cranked since 2010, doesnt remember hiw much gas is in it and its all mine to fix now.

On the drive home, naturally the tire blows an of coarse AAA won't cover it because I dont have trailer/rv coverage.
I finally got it home though and started to clean...

Just my luck. Walmart had what I needed and ready to go. First repair!

Welcome aboard! Nice little 175 to get handed ya! I'm sure she will clean up nice. How are the decks? If they are solid the first thing I would do is rebed any mounting screws that penetrate the deck. That 90hp is a nice match for that hull. I have one on my 170.  Where in Fl are you from?

Pull the screws out that secure your console and seat, shoot some 5200 in the holes, and reinstall.  Gives you a chance also to see what condition your cockpit sole is in at these points, as this is where water intrusion into the deck coring would occur.  It would probably be a good idea to remove the swingback cooler seat and step on the area underneath, see if it's soft...

That makes sense. I did remove the center cooler/seat and felt for soft spots. Luckily, I didnt feel and give at all.
Today, I was removing the deckplates to clean out the hull and found a suprise....well besides the lizard carcass. My fuel sending unit was rusted away to the extent of it not being there. Im adding pictures soon.

I added a bunch of fuel treatment and flushed out all of the fuel lines. I didnt get a picture of of the fuel filter but it was filled with what I thought was oil. Nope. Just old gas.

I dumped it and flushed fresh gas through it too. Pulled the plugs and they all look good.

Is the gas from 2005/2006?  I think you would be better off draining your tank than trying to salvage that gas.

Nice looking boat btw!

Drain the fuel tank.  Luckily if it is that old you may get lucky and it is non-ethanol fuel.  Keep in mind once you run ethanol fuel in that tank the ethanol will loosen up all the varnish in the tank and quickly clog your fuel filter.  Any screw that you remove be sure to put 5200 in it before replacing the screw.  If your decks are solid you want to keep them that way by keeping the water out.  BTW the best way to feel the decks is to walk around on it in bare feet.

I couldn't believe how the fuel filter could be black as oil!

I found out that the gas in the tank is pump gas form any old gas station around. He put fresh gas in 2008. In 2010, he added 5 gallons along with staybil. I added a fuel treatment and shot carb cleaner into the carbs.

Today, I replaced the fuel sending unit because it was in BAD shape. I didnt actually have to disconnect any wires. Whey were already dissolved at the connectors. I also got out my hand pump and drained the fuel line. I hooked it up before the racor and pumped until it was clear. Then took about 2 more  gallons after that. I then went on the output side of the racor and drained anything between there and the primer bulb. The clear racor sight glass was actually see through.

I hooked the fuel line into a 5 gal tank I had with fresh hi-test. I could only get her to fire with starting fluid. when it did, it would smoke white/light grey in color. It would run for about 2-3 seconds then die. Later on, I said hell with it and hooked everything up like normal. I got her to run one time for about 20 sec without throttling it. It would have to be choked to start though. Same situation with the smoke too.

Now I can get it to crank right up but it dies after 3-5 sec. I did notice that when I prime the fuel bulb, it gets firm. after running, I have to squeeze it 2-3 times for it to get firm again. possible back pressure issue due to the old filter (clogged)? Hopefully some of you engine guys can help me out on this one.

Im not sure what this piece is but I think it has something to do with the oil...Its directly on the front of the engine. its red in color and you can turn it to face pointing directly up or straight down. there is a valve on it too (like the ones on bicycle tires). Im not sure if it should be facing up or down but it seems like it does something important.

Thank you guys for all of the insight. I'm new to all of this so have patience with me.

I decided to pull the drain bolt on the carburetor. Black oil-like substance came out. Almost like diluted oil, im guessing varnish? Time to drain it and shoot some carb cleaner into the bowl. Maybe that will solve my problem.varnish gumming up my float and needle.

There is no quick fix.  The carbs on any boat that has been sitting should be pulled off and cleaned.  If you don't you run the risk of one or more cylinders running lean.  On a two stroke lean means no oil and you end up burning up your motor.  You really need to fully service the boat an motor before you try running it.  We are talking lower unit oil change.  Water pump, fuel filters, remove the prop and grease the shaft.  Grease the steering tube etc etc.  You have confirmed it runs, so don't risk it by running it more.

Got a buddy to do a basic service and everything is running great. I splasher her on monday and ran around for a couple of hours with various rpm. Im really pleased with everything. The only flaw I noticed was my water pressure gauge was not registering. I had plenty of discharge and it was nowhere hot to the touch. Anyone know a part number for a new pressure sensor/sender?

Could be just a clog or kink in the hose feeding the pressure gauge.  Trace and flush it from the engine to the gauge to verify before paying for a new gauge.
