Reasonable Source for Rod Holder Inserts and Lid Clasp?
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:53:17 AM »
I know I've seen this addressed here before: I need a source for the white rubber inserts for generic 30-degree angled flush-mount rod holders -- that will ship them for a reasonable amount. I also still need a source for the GEM 1540 Plastic Door Latch or a similar anchor locker clasp referenced in my other post. I just can't justify spending $10 to ship a $1.99 part -- at least until it gives me $12 worth of angst...

How about $7 bucks of angst?
I called GEM and spoke with Jenny.

She'll ship you the product via USPS for about $4 bucks+/- but..... buying from the factory will cost you $3.
If you are interested, call the 800# in the link above and she'll walk you through the process.

No it ain't cheap but after all it says "marine" on the package.

PS... Google the part#  and there may yet be even better options. I present just one.

Good luck.

Re the rodholder inserts:

Bear in mind that the ID varies by manufacturer..."generic" doesn't exist.

Find out who made them (stamps, etc.) ...and get on Google.

Guys,

I just got off the phone with Jan at GEM and she was: a gem. Once I learned how nice they were about getting me those clasps shipped at a reasonable price, I thought I'd peruse their web site to see if there was any other business I could give them and, lo and behold, they had discontinued rod holder inserts for $4. When I asked about them and explained that I'd be willing to cut them to make them fit my holders, she said they'd give me dealer pricing at $2 each!  They have 37 left, btw. I bought two. I figure it they are made for GEM's angled rod holders, they may be close to the fit I need for my stock A'sport models, both (the GEM and A'Sport models) of which are probably in the standard 30 degree angle range, right? And for $2 each, it's worth the gamble. I'll let you know. And thanks for your efforts to help get this rolling.

Probably too late, but you should buy extras of everything at those prices, especially the clasps.  If you keep the boat long enough you will be replacing them again.  And then you'll need to (1) find them again and (2) have to deal with shipping costs again.
