Weeki Wachee River Ride ( PICS )
« on: April 16, 2013, 01:08:24 PM »
We stayed at the Hernando Beach Hotel over the weekend of April 6th, was a little windy and cold for the little woman on the Gulf so we dropped the 170AS in at Weeki Wachee Spring. We decided to go upstream and battle the kayaks. Had a blast....stopped at one bend on the sand for about a half hour and drank beer and relaxed, a sheriff on a cool looking jet ski (my tax dollars) putts by and we say hi and we chat a bit as he is drifting by. We make our way further upstream and find a excellent sand bar on a sharp turn that looks great for swimming. I beach the 170 in about 10 inches of water, put the motor down for my back anchor and commence to swim, drink beer, relax and help the uneducated kayaks captains maneuver the sharp turn. many many bikinis  8) After about a hour the sheriff returns heading downstream now, we chat again and I ask if he likes his job.....he says its the best job in the world :D After a couple hours on the sand bar, we pack up and head downstream to the dock and a great meal at the restaurant. When we get home later that weekend my buddy tells me that its illegal to drink beer on the Weeki Wachee River and I was lucky I didn't get a $65 fine for every can on board       anyone heard of this :?: I know you can't in the Weeki Wachee State Park, but I can't find any info anywhere about the River below the State Park boundaries that ends up in the Gulf. Why didn't the nice sheriff say something......do I look to old to be getting into trouble

Anyways, we had a great time..... in a round about sort of way....Thanks Bob and Scott

Probably the same rules I have experienced on Rainbow River. Absolutley no disposable containers of any kind! I have had my boat searched for disposable containers before. This includes things like potato chip bags, beverage cans, bottles, plastic cups, zip lock bags, etc. It better be in tupperware and none disposable or you are busted.  They actually have disposable container police at the ramp that do a courtesy inspection and tie a green ribbon to your boat that shows you have been checked. The good thing is you don't see one piece of garbage in that river like you do in Silver Springs, Silver Glen or Salt Springs so I guess its worth the aggravation.

Cool pics!  Great idea taking the 170 up the River.  It's been a long time since I've been on that river.  I never even thought of taking the 170 up there.  Maybe we can put together a 170 gathering!  BTW where are the pics of all the bikinis?

After a couple nice bruises on my arm, and being givin the BIRD a couple of times.....I decided to pay more attention to Juli.......worked out pretty well for me  .....but I will tell you this.....there are some very nice and well designed bikinis out there this year

A 170 river get together would be fun, there were a couple shallow spots on the WW that were 10 - 20 inches, but they were short, didn't have to run the motor up high for any more than 30 sec. or so....but we could have gotten out and walked the boat across too. I was more interested in seeing how shallow I could run if I had to.....12" is about the minimum with 2 and gear. I was really surprised of the amount of larger boats docked there along the river, even in the shallow areas.

You just have to go slow, be prepared to maneuver sharp turns in fast currents, which is a lot of fun, and enjoy the shaded scenery. I waved and said Hi to every Kayak captain and did my best to stay in deep water but not disturb their path, only a couple complained about me having a motor.

I really need to find or get the official river rules somewhere for all these nice rivers in that area, I have searched the internet but can't seem to come up with anything new and official, other than the big Parks along the rivers. Which are all mostly No Alcohol, No Food, No Motors, No Fun.....
