222 Bildge hole
« on: April 16, 2013, 11:12:03 AM »
This is my first classic aquasport so please understand I know this is probably a stupid question. The boat has a hole (through the hull) just above the drain plug that has a threaded end on the inside of the hull. Can someone tell me what this is for? I assume it is for a bilge pump of some sort but it would be almost a 90 degree bend on the inside of the hull if attach anything to it.

This sounds unusual.

Can you send a pic?

Thanks

It sounds like some sort of livewell pickup to me.   Here is a picture of my CCP when I first got her.  Look above the drain plug.  Does it look similar to mine?  Being a 1973, obviously not a CCP but the 222 might have had a similar setup.

Sounds like a raw water pick up on an 80s model CCP for the transom live well.

Didn't know they had them on the 73 22-2.
I'll look for a pic.

If I recall it is a little higher than that since mine has twin motors and the area is clear. The hole comes out just above the deck I will take pictures on lunch.

That is it. But the problem is it floods the boat when I put it in the water. But if I plug it there is no way for the deck to drain when out of the water.

Noticed I plugged the threaded side with an oil bottle cap so that I could use it for the day

Thank you so much for the info. That is really what I was after if it was a drain I did not want to plug it.

Justin,

These drains on almost all of our boats tend to take on water at launch and drain once the boat is sitting level.  If your boat still takes on water when sitting level and with only one or two folks aboard, then I imagine she's somewhat heavy or waterlogged (very common with these old boats) and you'll just need to keep the hole plugged at all times.  Your simple option is just to keep a couple flip-lever plugs in your transom until you need to drain your deck.  Personally, I launch with my transom plugged to prevent my deck from getting soaked, but if things get wet or rough I pull the plugs to let excess water drain from the deck.

Does this conversation below help at all regarding your options?

Perfect that is exactly what I was looking for and was about to be my next question. Yesterday I thought of using a ball scupper but did not want to if it was originally a water return. Thank you for all of the help this page has been more than amazing.

You said it was threaded from the outside?

I knew I read threaded somewhere - I think what got me thinking was "inside the hull", not inside the boat.
