paint questions/opinions with darker colors
« on: March 29, 2013, 06:25:00 PM »
ok so I've done the research and know the breakdown of the basics on the different paint companies/options/methods... I am going with: Flag Blue and am 99.9% sure I'm going with Alexseal because from what I have read:
- you can wet sand/blend in any dings/scratches from repairs
-you can restore it to near original color because the pigments "float" through the whole layer of paint (where others like Awlgrip sinks to the base)
-ease of options for either spray or roll/tip
-ability to blend paint (I plan on enclosing my transom next fall and would like to blend the paint).

This is the first time I have painted a boat so I'm thinking the Alexseal will allow some percentage of "beginner error" where I can sand it out and apply another coat (or 2).

I know the darker colors show more imperfections and that 99% of paint work is prep work- but I wanted to know if anyone had any experience with Alexseal (I havent found anyone on this site who has used Alexseal).

currently my boat is the original white gel coat. so I know I will have to do the usual prep work to fix any dings and scratches as well as scuff and prime. I'm going to keep the same brand primer as whatever top coat I do- For those who have painted before: did you find white or grey to be easier?

Also, I'm planning on rolling/tip method.

Does anyone have any tips or advice to steer me in any different directions? I'm gonna order some paint on Monday and try to get started next weekend.

Thanks very much!

I painted my 17' Hydra sport with Interlux Perfection paint with the roll and tip method. It came out good but you better not skip any steps. Make sure you have the right rollers and brush also, so they do not fall apart from the solvent in the paint.

I called Interlux and they were very helpful in answering any questions I had. Here's where I bought my paint and supplies.
