Need some Ideas/Help with my 75' 170
« on: March 28, 2013, 10:21:47 AM »
Hi everyone, finally got the 170 cleaned and running good now it's time to tackle some issues I have with aesthetics. I am trying to keep as much of the original look...Teak and such... as I can. One of the previous owners did a lot of work, some good, some bad...as you will see.

First thing that has to go is the seat, but I need some relatively inexpensive IDEA'S here, the live well is staying.(a $300 dollar leaning post is beyond my budget for a seat, although I would love to have a one) the following pic is proof that it has to go.......

Next is the console, they had hacked up the upper Teak board and the console to install some gadget, the console hole I can work with, but I need a old worn teak console top that's one piece(screw holes are alright) to replace this one. Any of you who have pulled your teak piece off, I will buy it, I believe new is not a option because it won't match very well.......or Idea's.....it is approx. 29"x7.5"....

This one is for the local guys..... Touch up for sides, I have a few nicks and deep scratches that I need to color match, paint on the boat is pretty good so I will not be repainting the sides. Who is the best in the area for color matching and mixing some touch up......

I will need to paint the top of my gunnels and Bow, repainted once and is peeling. I have never did this before but want to tackle it and use the roll and tip method. If any of you local guys have bought paint and have done this yourself, I want to learn, reading a post is fine but hands on is everything to me. I might have have some stuff to practice on I just need hands on pointers....I will bring the beer too..... Oh yea, as you can see in this pic, my front hinges are a little light, any one have one of those?

The rest of my pics for this boat are here

any ideas or pointers will be appreciated....

Here's an idea, post # 2.

A member had an original smoked glass hatch for a 170 but I believe he gave it to another member.

Using Kraw's dimensions, you may be able to have one made up but that might get expensive. Starboard could substitute if you can get a scrap piece.

Good luck.

Paul,

My father still has his original anchor locker cover from his '79 170.  I think he plans to build something nicer (he's a lifetime woodworker) so he may be willing to part with his.  It's pretty small too, so shipping wouldn't be too bad.  Condition wise I'd say it probably would match the rest of your teak perfectly (translation = old, gray, and somewhat beat up, but likely still strong and/or salvageable).  I will ask.

Should be someone close to you that sells starboard by the square foot, I'd try & pick up a piece big enough to cut the anchor hatch & console top from.  The place I use gets about $7 per sf for 1/2" thick, and it goes up by about $3/sf as you get thicker.
And for the seat how about getting one of those $35 cooler cushions & a snap kit so it doesn't blow away.

A little teak cleaner and oil will make that Teak look almost new.  Even better sand  it down to cleanwood ans seal it with a teak sealer such as Semco teak sealer.  i know your boat well since almost bought it from a guy in St. Pete less than a year ago.  A simple seat cushion with snaps would be the easiest seat solution.  Starboard for the top of the console would be a good idea.  These guys at http://boathelpshop.com/ might be able to help with a cut to size piece of it.  (they are in Clearwater btw).  For the top of the gunwales and bow I'd suggest some non skid paint on there.
