Better Scupper than Ball type?
« on: March 14, 2013, 08:00:31 AM »
Pulled the 170 that I keep in water 24/7 out for check-up etc.
Put in the Ping Pong type scuppers the first time.
Didn't like the way they worked, get to much growth & can't clean easily.
Any recommends on other types that are Low Maint?
Not sure with the "Flap" plastic type would like to use something better.

I had the ping pong type on my 170.  I found it to be the best option for the scupper situation.  When I first bought my 170, it had the rubber flaps.  I found the ping pong scupper worked much better.  Seems like a had much more water intrusion with the rubber flaps.

You do have to make sure the ball is clean, but I never found myself having to clean them much.

What brand ball scupper did you get?  TH marine makes the "flow max" brand that are two pieces.  This allows you to remove the outer housing and ball for easy cleaning.  Also the silicone insert seems to seal the best.

Short of putting plugs (not good since the deck won't self bail) in the boat the ball type is your best bet.  I'd say if you have that much growth you have to clean them pretty often!

I had the ping pong ball scuppers on my 200 Osprey.  I basically liked them except when I had my big butt near the transom but they were a pain to clean.  I used to remove the screws and remove the whole unit but after a while, the holes started to strip.

Check out page 4 of jdupree's transom rebuild thread on this forum.  He talks about the rectangular flapper door types that are supposed to slam shut when there is any water pressure.  Not sure how well they work especially at rest with no significant pressure on them.
