Crazy electrical issue day!!!!

OK, here is what is going on.
I have had some new items installed.
Bait pump to existing 2 wires (black and brown).
A Furuno GPS (to the electronic box busbar)
Pos and neg only to the busbar (w inline fuse).

We rerouted a couple of LED courtesy lights.
(same wires that were there).
Here is the problem,

With the batteries on, there is no power to the tilt trim, engine ignition or the gauges??????
The motor system is dead.
I cant for the life of me figure this out.

Every other device or accessory works as it should.
With the battery on, just no ignition gauges or trim tilt?
The only other issue is this once the batteries are turned to 1 or 2 or even both
The hour meter runs even if the ignition is on the off position.

I called my boat guy (who is very good).
I am just really puzzled.
I would love to hear opinions.

Bryan,
Keep in mind that the "ship's systems" and the "engine's systems" are entirely separate, save for a common ground.  That being said, very interesting that the hour meter is logging even with the ignition off.  That says that the yellow wire (Yam, correct?) is seeing power when it shouldn't.  Hmmmm....

Trim and tilt comes out of the round 6-pin plug, the harness from the binnacle plugs into it's mating connector in the engine harness very close to where the engine harness plugs into the ignition switch module.

What I would do is unplug the big black connector where the engine harness plugs into the ign switch module and make sure it is plugged in correctly (did your guy unplug this to gain access to something?).  It is a pin pattern, but, it's entirely possible, by force, that he got it plugged in wrong, which would explain both the power issue on the yellow wire, and nothing else working...

Pete, remember, the big blue connector only deals with the ship's systems...not the engine's...

And make sure the trim/tilt switch on the motor works.  This rules out an issue in the electrics on the powerhead...

Thanks for the replays.
No nothing was unplugged.
The engine tilt trim as well as the binnacle tilt trim does not work.
Yes Bob, it is the engine electrical system not working.
Everything else is just great.

I do homes, it is like the breaker is off for the engine, if that makes sense.
Maybe a loose battery terminal?

Yes Bob, I noticed the hour meter is running with the battery on and ignition off, really weird.
It is like the pos (or neg)  for the motor system is not connected.
Dont know why the hour meter is running, maybe a back feed? I doubt it would run that way?
My guy will get it sorted out, I am just really curious about it.

Bryan, there are several fuses on the motor, but I doubt that's the issue, as the ign power feed (yellow wire) is receiving power (hour meter running), if the main fuse had blown on the powerhead, everything would be dead.  The way to install an hourmeter on a Yam is to tap into the yellow wire off the gauge harness for positive, black of course for ground.

The place to start of course would be your batt cables.  Not just those on the batts themselves but also the cable lugs on the backside of the batt switch.  Yes, that means pulling down the switch, but I would recommend it...

Yes, good call.
If I have time, I will check it out tomorrow.
I have my guy David, from OC Outboards coming to do the yearly service.
Then White Seabass season, (I hope).

I will post up the remedy  once discovered.
I am almost sure it is simple.

I thought about it last night.
It has to be a Pos or a Neg wire somewhere in the connection.
I was also thinking maybe the hour meter is not wired right?
Maybe is back feeding?
I am going to check it out later today. Starting with the Batteries and making sure they are correct.
Is there a photo of the correct wiring for 2 batteries on a switch?
I am thinking we missed a Neg wire to the outboard?
I will look around.
It must me something simple KISS right?

Hey Bryan, not that I know much of wiring but take a DVM and check to see if the lines coming into the switches are hot. Find the lead going to the motor and check continuity at the motor. It sounds like one of them didn't get put back on the right post. If they were wrong on the switch wouldn't it be possible for it to bridge the hour meter and power it up? But what do I know?  my .02!

Bryan,
A couple drawings with explanations on how 2 batteries are wired to a OFF/BATT 1/BOTH/BATT 2 switch...



Now, unless something on the engine side was disconnected during this latest install, nothing should have changed, engine wise.  IF the batts were messed with, your guy may have overlooked the ground cable coming off the motor...

Well, I am a complete idiot!!!!
I had put on some new terminal covers on the batteries.
Well, I "forgot" the outboard negative on the reconnect.
Boat is once again awesome.
Not as nice as Scott's but awesome.

One more thing.
I have a new fire extinguisher to mount.
I usually keep under the console.
Anyone have a recessed panel in the console (My old Whaler had one).
My Osprey is more of a curved console, my Whaler sharper lines.
I was just thinking of doing something nice or clean looking.
