Got Garmin 168...Need maps
« on: March 12, 2013, 12:08:10 AM »
Hey guys. I just got a old Garmin 168 from a friend. It works fine but is in serious need of some map update. I need Garmin "blue chart" the old version, on a CD for the Southwest Florida area.
Garmin no longer sells them and everywhere online is selling Bluechart G2 on cards.  I need the ORIGINAL blue chart, or a CD ROM to update the plotter via the data cable and my computer. This plotter doesnt take any kind of chip
Any help appreciated!!

The BlueChart CDs don't work that easily.  You have to unlock the BlueChart maps via Garmin's website or by phone.  The unlock is keyed to the unit's serial number and to a 25 digit code that comes with the CD.  The unlock code only works with that gps.  I would be happy to send you a BlueChart CD but it will not load maps to your unit unless you get with Garmin and pay for a new unlock code.  A new unlock code was running close to $100 before BlueChart was discontinued.  Since BlueChart is discontinued I am not sure Garmin will even sell you an unlock code now.

There are a FEW old Garmin products like Waterways and Lights and Inland Lakes that do not require an unlock code.  Depending on your area, Inland Lakes may show a good bit of info from the Intracoastal inland.  Waterways and Lights basically is what it says.  It will show waterways, buoys, and lights on navigable waterways but that is it.  No depths, no good land detail, and the buoy and light data is 12-14 years old now.

Your best option is to sell that 168 and go one generation newer on the Garmin unit.  A 178 or newer Garmin will accept pre-programmed data cards with detailed map info.  Used data cards are on eBay all the time.  The pre-programmed data cards will work in any Garmin unit that accepts them and do not require an unlock code.

OK, I have found a Garmin 16 gig data card, probably from the 178 but not sure.  Labeled Garmin, about 3/4" wide by 1 1/4" long.  Has the little "pull out" handle for removing it from the card slot.  Will that work in your 168?  Need a pic?

Oh chit, just re-read.  No chart door on the 168?

Hate to say it, but if it works as a depth finder, at least it's still good for something...

It works on a bunch of Garmins after the 168.  Probably bring $30-40 on fleaBay.

well, if nobody is going to ask, I will, I do not think it works for the 168....down load only from PC hook up. But I believe it will work with the unit I just received from a very outgoing and generous man, who I owe big time  :) I could use it for that unit and another I have.... I saved your return address from the first package...I am preparing a  :bom: for you as I type. Prepare to be blown away my friend

correct me if I am wrong, I think the 168 was a pre-card system :?:

Thanks Bob.  Let Paul have it.  I have a spare or two on hand for my older Garmins.
