setback bracket/paint..helpp
« on: March 08, 2013, 04:55:07 PM »
I am restoring a 72 22'2. im planning on glassing in the transom within the next couple weeks. i am a welder and was planning on making my own setback bracket for the motor once the transom is finished. i know that the bracket has to be the same angle as your original transom, and i was planning on building a manual jackplate-(6-8 inches) into the bracket itself. The thing i dont know is do you have to raise the motor up or down on the bracket? i was obviously going to raise the motor by putting the jackplate into the bracket but how much do i raise it since the motor is going to be approximately 2ft farther back than it was originally mounted. and can i mount the set back bracket into the same holes that that motor was orginally mounted?

also am going to repaint the boat after i do the transom..what is a good high build primer and top coat that i could use and what methods and steps should i take? im also looking for something reasonable around 3-350.

any help will be appreciated thanks!! :thumleft:

heres a couple pictures of the progress as of about a month ago. all that bottom paint is gone after lots of sanding and the boat is sanded down now. this is a very slow process as i am only 21 and funds are limited but it will be done someday ha :thumright:

For every 12" of setback the motor can be raised 1".

The location of the bracket will depend on the shaft length of your motor. Check here for some good info.

Regarding the jack plate and raising the motor make sure you install a water pressure gauge.

If I am understanding you question this is my answer.

I think it would depend on how you are designing you bracket if you would even need a jack plate.
I would think if it was along the lines of an armstrong bracket you would not need the added jack plate.

As far as adjustment of the manual jack plate. That would be something you would do once the boat is finished and running. You will have to adjust it to find your sweet spot. IMO I dont think you would gain much with a manual plate.
I adjust my hydraulic Porta Bracket according to conditions. I would think if you had the plate set at conditions when the seas are flat this could really effect the over all performance and handling in rough seas.

Just my opinion.

A really good high build primer is made by Evercoat
It's a 2 part primer called Feather-Fill
You don't you use thinner. With 3-4 good coats it's fills like a finishing putty
At 63 bucks a gallon inc. hardener you can't beat it.

What Steve said.  Manual jack plates (loosen bolts, raise motor, tighten bolts) are designed for "set it and forget it" type installs, where you have a need for a jack plate to solve clearance issues, but are not used in the traditional sense of a jack plate.

If you want to adjust "on the fly", dealing with given water situations, you need hydraulic...

thank you everyone for the feedback. very helpful. i am still researching what design i should go with when i make the bracket and what aluminum to use. whether it be squared tubing or round tubing and what size. i was thinking squared aluminum tubing would work best and maybe around 1 1/2". And i also looked up that evercoat feather fill and that does look like some good stuff so i think im going to put 2-3 coats of that on the boat with some sanding in between coats and then a top coat after that. got to find a good reasonabally priced topcoat as well. any input on that would be appreciated too, thanks!

The old Gil Brackets use to be made with tubing but the problem with the old Gil Brackets was they did not provide any floatation. If I was you I'd make the bracket like Armstrong or Mattson and use aluminum sheets.  As far as top coats, have you looked at the Awlgrip products?
