Axle and spring removal
« on: March 03, 2013, 07:27:32 PM »
I need to do some cleaning and repainting on my axles and springs on my dual Continetal trailer. I was thinking of jacking up the trailer frame with the boat on it a few inches, and then taking off the u bolts that hold the axle sliders to the frame. I would then like to roll the entire assembly out from under the frame.

Is this possible to do??? It looks like four u bolts on each side attach the entire slider, springs, axles and wheels to the frame. I am hoping to just roll out the whole thing, do my cleanup, and roll it back under the boat and trailer frame.

Has anyone done this?

After jacking the trailer up, why not just remove the tires then remove the springs and axles?

If you do that you have to replace the u-bolts since you are only supposed to tighten them down once.

I think I may have to replace the slider frame that the springs mount to. They seen to have some heavy flaking rust. As far as the u bolts they look pretty good as well as the nuts. I can reuse them. Might put some blue thread locker(can't think of the right name at the moment) on them.

I have light rust on the axles and thought maybe I could just roll out the whole mess and that care of them and spray the springs which look good but starting to rust. I didn't really want to disassemble the springs and axles.

This trailer has had some work done to it before I bought it. I think the sliders now need replacing.

Well I finished up this rebuild job. The whole rolling assembly rolled right out from under the trailer. Did the work and rolled it back under again. Piece of cake.
