« on: February 27, 2013, 08:08:14 AM »
I just bought my 1995 225 Explorer a week or so ago and have another question, below is a pic (sorry for the quality) one of the through hull drains is plugged up with what looks like 5200, does anyone know what drain this used to be? havent had a chance to look her over too well due to work.

That looks like the drain for the storage locker directly behind/under your helm seat.  I would look into why that is plugged off asap. If the thru hull or hose is broken or missing that could be bad!

You should have an identical thru hull drain on the port side.  The PO may have wanted to keep the storage lockers dry so he plugged it.  But that doesn't make any sense to me since I have never seen any water back up into my boxes.  Also a simple drain plug in the box would accomplish the same thing.

I agree that is for the storage behind the helm seat, why someone would plug it like that though

Not sure on the 225 but the spaces below my helm chairs are for differnet things - starboard is plumbed for a livewell and the Port side is supposed to be an ice chest.  I used both for dry storage. Both, as said earlier, have drains out each side (the one plugged on yours) and both can be (and are in my boat) plugged inside the wells with regular plugs.
You can get the 5200 out and then use it as it was design to be.

On the 225/245 both boxes are insulated storage with drains.

After finding the plug for the fishbox drain on my 170 was there because the drain hose was off and laying in the bilge I'd investigate why that thru hull is plugged with 5200.  If I didn't look into why my 170s drain was plugged my boat could have sunk!

I know why it was plugged off now, the fitting is broken off on the bottom of the insulated box, now it just drains into the bilge, now all i have to do is get time enough to replace it.

It sounds like pie plate access hole time.

Yep,
That's a tough one to reach. I replaced both insulated box drains when I had my tank out. Access was "easier" but still a little tricky with the hatch removed and squeezing between the deck and stringers.

I did however attach my on - deck live well to this starboard thru hull drain and the factory "live-well" now must drain to the bilge but..

I keep a plug in the drain and use this box for storage. It doesn't seem to attract a lot of water anyway (knock on balsa).

Ok so where is the hose end that connects to the drain?   you may want to plug the end of that hose in the mean time.  You don't want a hole at the watering ofcyou boat just plugged with 5200.!

wanting to install a stereo in the boat, maybe I can access it via some convenient speaker hole cutout instead....

If you take out the starboard side aft cabin wall, not hard to do, you should be able to see in there pretty well

I'm wondering how the fitting managed to get broken in the first place!  I'm betting they connected the hose to the box drain at the factory before they put the cap on.  Then they connect it to the thru hull fitting thru the pie plate at the aft end of the walk around.
