Aquasport 19-6 conversion to flats boat

Awesome idea! There was a guy who started a similar build on a 19 mako a couple years ago, but he never finished the thread/build... its over on Classicmako.com, probably 2 years ago.

Did you cut down the gunwale height any? I would think if you went with a light enough HP you'd be able to get through any chop in the bay and still float in some pretty shallow water.

What are your interior plans? Poling platform, smaller center console, front and back casting decks, livewells?

i think 200 hp would scoot her along pretty quick, im thinking if she's lite enough and with the lower free board, she'll break the 60 mph barrier.

Looks good ....My 19-6 with a Johnson 150 2 stoke and a 15x17 S/S prop will top out at 44mph with me and my wife on it.
But I have a 55 gal tank and extra glass on the hull inside and a t-top...Be carefull how far forward you move your gas tank, on mine I moved it forward about 16 inches and it also went from 40 gal to 55 gal..and I have the front a little lower in the water than it was.. about 1- 1 1/2 inches at the drain for the front box..I like the idea of what your doing ..

Have you considered utilizing an existing deck and hatches as the starting point for your rebuild. If you are building a flat foredeck and aft deck flats boat, building the receivers and hatches may take an inordinate amount of time. You may be well served to find a decent flats boat deck and liner to utilize as the basis for your rebuild. It would be much easier to add rolled gunwales to an existing deck by glassing pvc forms around the sheerline and glassing the existing deck down to the rolled gunwales than starting from scratch. Additionally, you would probably save a lot of money. If you need help tracking down an old flats boat deck and and liner, feel free to give me a call. It looks like a great project.

What motor???

I'm between a very nice 98' Yamaha 130 hp and a 03' Yamaha 150 HPDI for my 19-6 flats boat conversion. Both motors are in excellent shape.  I dont need to go very very fast but would like to cruise in the mid 30's.   Top end is really not an issue.

Will the 130hp cut it or will I regret not having gone with the 150 HDPI??

I'll be building the deck from scratch using a temporary mold built form wood and formica, All the hatches will be built in.  Most of the parts are coming from a simple flat table mold that is modified as needed. The console, like the deck,  will require a more complex mold that will be  made of wood and formica for a one time (maybe two time) use that usually gets destroyed when removing the finished fiberglass part. Then comes the sanding and finishing of the entire boat with awlgrip. I'm really shooting for a -1000lb hull, no motor & rigging.

The cockpit sole will be built on top of the stringers.

Personally, the 130 will push your boat fine but.....

Be prepared for the standard answer: Better to have 150hp in case you ever need it, still....

The 150 is a newer motor, probably weight is similar and may have less use so.....

Price, seems to be the driver here. What's the deal there?
Is the 130 a good deal cheaper and that said, what can you afford?

Newer isn't always better but there is an age difference between the two.
Lastly, if both are low hrs. and within your budget, opt for the 150.

How many folks will you usually fish? If three or less...the 130 Yammie is all you need, especially since you're not concerned with speed.

I've run 130 Yammies in the past. Absolute honey pies. Only issue is filtration. Keep a check on the filters...will be the best engine you ever ran.

More torque than you think...and sips gas too.

My 2 cents... if both motors are carb motors and have similar # of hrs, I would go with the one that is a better price and looks to have been taken care of better...but if the 2003 is fuel injected I would go that route...but thats just me...fewer things to keep adjusted than carbs and should get better fuel economy

I agree with Scott. That hull will really be light when your finished. I have the same boat and will be putting a 115 to a 130 on it this spring. I have to tell you how much I’m looking forward to watching this build to completion. I at one time thought of making a major change to a 222ccp. Not to a flats boat but to deep water standard Aquasport, by cutting down the top of the boat. Boy do I get it from Bob, all in fun though. He asked me if I would cut the finns off a 59 catty. I told him yep. bwahahahaha

Heck Skoot has a 90 Tohatsu on his 19'-6 and it gets along fine.  The 130 or 150 would both be good picks.  I'd go with the 150 since it is a HPDI.
