Need some advice on a outboard
« on: February 25, 2013, 10:42:23 PM »
I have a 222ccp and its now time to get a motor I know the standard motor was a 200-245 but I was thinking I don't need to fly I'd rather cruise. I want to do a single.  I was thinking about a 150-175 hp what are your thoughts fellas?

Always better to have hp and not use it then to need it and not have it, plus you would work a smaller motor harder to push the boat, I wouldn't do it.

The owners here run 200 two strokes.

They seem perfect for the hull.

A 175 would not be enough to get her deep V popping with a fishing load....and a 225 four stroke too much with regard to weight at the transom.

200HP two stroke would be the ticket for that hull.  You'd probably burn more fuel with less HP since you would have to work the motor more and a 200 weighs the same as a 175.  As Scott said the deep V takes some power to push it.  Just cause you have the power doesn't mean you have to fly around WOT unless you need it.

From the factory, the standard motor in 1984 for a 222CCP was the "classic" 185 hp Evinrude. Mine came with that motor. The 200 hp is what many run but not being the motor guru but understanding how things work I'd venture a guess and say that a modern 175 hp would provide the same push (maybe more) than the old 185. Kinda like that can of two stroke oil. Still good but not as good as a modern can of oil with all the improvements.

If you're looking at used, maybe the 200 can be a deal. New, well how much difference in cost between a 175 and 200hp. Probably not a deal breaker there and if you keep your hand off the throttle I'd guess your mileage will be somewhat the same.

More to consider than just the hp.

Good luck.

In this vid it shows a ccp 200 I guess with a 130 4 stroke on it and it looks like its got some speed. Besides the 2 feet is there any other diffrance that won't make a 150 work on a 222? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DKebNmQFRXY

Linky no work for me.

Can't see so......

If it's a 20' CCP
222 CCP is about 300 lbs heavier but....

If it's a 20' Osprey then the 222 is about 650 lbs. heavier.

Go with 200-225 two stroke.  225s are really popular for repowers, so there are a lot of them around used that can be picked up cheap.  There is no real weight difference in a 175 and a 200 or 225.  My $0.02 - 3.0 liter Mercury Optimax - 200 or 225 with a 19 or 21 pitch prop - you will be happy.    :thumleft:

I went with a 175 as it is the 2.5 block and lighter than a 200/225 3.0 block  roughly a 75 pounds weight savings.

I would look for a 225 opti
