New Jersey is Gangsta!
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:10:54 PM »
When I went to register my new Aquasport Explorer, the great State of New Jersey hit me up for $980.00 for state sales tax, plus $250.00 for tax on the trailer.  Today, I learned that boat trailer registration runs from March to March in New Jersey, so if I wanted to, I could pay for the 2012-2013 registration but it will only be good till the end of February.  Or I could pay for both the 2012-2013 and the 2013-2014 at the same time so I don't have to come back in a week.  And of course, I could just tow the boat 50 miles down the highway with no license plate and then just register the boat next week.  Hmmm.... I could probably get away with it but...  Hopefully, by the end of this, I'll have a couple dollars left over to maybe just turn on my motor and hear how it sounds.

Now if that ain't some gangsta s&*t I don't know what is.

That's an absolute rip

NC charges 30 dollars flat for three years registration....no sales tax on the purchase.

No title? Not a problem...title included. Still 30 bucks.

Did you have the bill of sale itemized?  In FL you don't have to pay sales tax on a used outboard, only the hull itself.

do you have a friend who has a current-registered trailer,,, give him a 6-pack and borrow his tag so you can get the boat home or where ever you are gonna store it... that is ridiculous that they cant pro-rate the next years registration and just add the month...

In NJ if you by a motor vehicle/boat/trailer etc from anyone other than a NJ dealer you pay the sales tax at registration.  A NJ dealer takes it up front. One way around it is a reciept for less than you actually paid for the vehicle. :silent: If it seems resonable the clerks at DMV won't even ask. I've used this method dozens of times without an issue.

All trailers are Mar to Mar, but its only $23 a year. One way around it is to borrow a plate from someone who has a boat trailer. They all say trailer and no one will check the SR Number.  If you get stopped you just tell them you borrowed the trailer.

The problem you had is you're too honest  :)  :)

Damn I love Alabama.

Boat Registration
REGISTERING YOUR BOAT

DOCUMENTED VESSELS
Vessels documented with the U. S. Coast Guard as commercial are not required to be registered with the state. Vessels documented as pleasure are required to register, however, they do not have to display the Alabama registration number on the bow. The current year decal should be placed in a conspicuous location on the vessel and the certificate shall be on board when in operation.

ALABAMA DOES NOT REQUIRE BOAT TRAILERS TO BE LICENSED

MEASURING THE LENGTH OF YOUR VESSEL
It is important that you list the exact length of your vessel on the application for registration. The length is the straight line distance from the foremost part of the boat (bow) to the rearmost part of the boat (stern). Bowsprits, outboard motors brackets, rudders and other attachments are not to be included in this measurement.

Boats are divided into four (4) classes as follows:
Class I        -    Less than 4.9 meters (16ft)
Class II       -    4.9 meters (16ft) to less than 7.9 meters (26ft)
Class III      -    7.9 meters (26ft) to less than 12.2 meters (40ft)
Class IV      -    12.2 meters (40ft) and above

FEES

First Time and Renewal
Class I       $18.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
Class II       $23.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
Class III      $73.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
Class IV     $98.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
Class V     $23.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
(Dealer)     for each dealer tag

Transfer -  $3.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee
(Applies to vessels with a current year registration but needs to be transferred into new owner's name)

Transfer/Renewal - $3.00 plus $2.00 issuance fee and the correct class fee. Applies to vessels with no current registration that needs to be transferred into new owner's name

NOTE: IF YOUR VESSEL IS BROUGHT INTO ALABAMA FROM ANOTHER STATE, THERE WILL BE NO TRANSFER FEE CHARGED, A NEW ALABAMA NUMBER WILL BE ISSUED. ALSO, IF PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED IN ANOTHER STATE, PLEASE SURRENDER LAST STATE REGISTRATION

There is a 4% sales tax on boat sales.
Politics have no relation to morals.

Ok, I didn't want to admit this but the broker whispered to me, "Hey James, we intentionally left the price paid for the boat blank      So I thought about it AND thought about it some more and I finally came up with a price that seemed reasonable to me.  Unfortunately, I forgot to write that "reasonable" price on the actual title and when the girl at DMV reminded me that I had left that space blank, I once again thought about it and then finally wrote $14000.00.  So I then paid a little over a thousand dollars for both sales tax and the sticker.  So of course, my wife had a lot to say.  If I would have written down what she wanted me to write, I would have written something like $14.00 or better yet, "Your Honor, it was a gift, I swear!"  Anyway, that's my tale of woe.  I know I'd feel better if I could go fishing.  I'm really, really ready!

I tried that and the only way you can get away with it is to have separate bill of sale for the motor and boat, as wingtime stated. If your bill of sale says boat and motor, or just lists the boat you pay on the whole rig. Florida also now charges you for a whole year if you buy the boat a month or so before your birthday. I bought the boat a few weeks before my birthday but waited until after my birthday to register it. They still tried to charge me for the past year because the bill of sale was dated before I went to register it.

I also found out that the counties can now charge you sales tax on top of the state sales tax. This is different for each county.

I pitched a bitch about the whole thing and did get them to drop the prior years registration fee. Hell the prior owner paid for that year, why should I have to repay for it.

So in the future I will have everything listed separate on bills of sale, and if it's close to my birthday either put a deposit on it and pickup after my birthday, or have no date on the bill of sale, or title.
