Anyone installed a Oxygenator bait pump system?
« on: February 21, 2013, 08:27:09 PM »
Did a search but didnt see so here goes.
I am doing a few upgrades this winter.
I came across a Rule Oxygenator bait pump system.
I am wondering if anyone have installed one in the Aquasport built in bait tank? (transom tank)

I think it would work well, just dont know about the application.

Hi Bryan,

Guess it depends on the bait of choice there. Over here, hardy baits like hardhead mullet, bull minnows, pinfish etc....an aerator system such as that works fine.

In Florida...their hardy baits are the above, plus goggle eyes and blue runners.

More fragile baits...you'll definitely want to go with a raw-water input/overflow system. More work, but if engineered correctly, works like a champ regardless of bait choice.

There are a bunch of great examples here on rigging raw water systems. Basically, a 3/4 clamshell raw water pickup underneath, bronze through hull, seacock, pump, 3/4 hose to bottom of tank. 1 1/2 hose returns out of livewell at top, seacock at bottom of transom,  1 1/2 bronze through hull to discharge.

If you choose to go this route check the Miss D rebuild pics....you'll see the system components before the deck went in. Scroll through the pics only 'till you find what you need

On the tuna boats over there....the guys use anchovies, right? Are they hardy or fragile? What bait would you like to fish?

Thanks for everything Bryan :thumright:

Boat is looking awesome Scott.
I cant wait to see it in person.
Anchovies Sardines and squid.
Squid being fragile ,that is why I thought about the smaller system.
Ill see what Bob has to say.

That system provides both raw water and oxygen. IMO the problem with that system is that too much oxygen will kill your bait. I would recommend a plain raw water pump.

A well timed flow is more important then adding 02.

a 30-40 gallon tank with a 500-800gph pump should work. I would advise adding a valve to the inlet to adjust flow.

It should take 8-10 minutes to fill a 30-40 gallon tank.

To add air, all you need is a small check valve inserted somewhere on the inlet. This will allow air into the system and not water out. But this is really not necessary.

By the way, I would consider squid a hardy bait. It's the anchovies you need to worry about. Those little guys are fragile.

And of course the most important part of a tank is it's capacity. DO NOT OVERFILL with bait. A half scoop of live baits is better then a full scoop of dead ones.

Yes, I agree although the way the squid is handled before we get it is what makes it fragile.
I agree with the Anchovies not being a very strong bait.
I think I will just replace the pump with a quality  500 or so pump.
Yes, I always ask for a short scoop, they last much longer, just less chum.

Thanks much

Check out KeepAlive.  I used them in the past and that system in outstanding.  You can introfuce enough air to foam the well over and fill your boat if you want.  I did a review on it a long time ago..you can see it here http://www.floridainshoreangler.com/newsflash/keep-alive-bait-system  You'll be happy with it, no doubt.
