Baitwell for 1995 225 Explorer
« on: February 18, 2013, 07:27:46 AM »
Got a question about the baitwell, I know how to pump the water into the baitwell, question is, how do you drain/pump it out?

Ive been on my new boat no more than an hour literally due to working 8 days a week, so dont beat me up too bad for asking a stypid question.

I havent towed the boat anywhere either, do you think a Toyota Tacoma 4 dr with the V6 will pull it out of the water at the ramp? I know it probably will have no problem pulling it down the highway, and I realize that stopping it in a hurry will be a challenge.  The ramps I use are within a couple miles of my house so getting up to highway/interstate speeds are not in my near future. (with the Toyota anyway)

thanks in advance for any answers or replies.

Not familiar with your boat but there are three possibilities.
1) Pull the plug
2) Remove the stand pipe
3) Open a valve on the drain hose.

Fernando has it with #2 just pull the stand pipe and the baitwell will drain on it's  own accord.

DD,
Since question #1 has already been answered, I'll opine on question #2, the Tacoma.  One of my customers was pulling a 24' Pursuit CC, twin 150s, T/top...not a light boat by any means, with the exact same truck.  Even pulled her over to my place from Gainesville (around 110 miles).  While the Pursuit did "tax" the truck a bit, he never felt like there was or were going to be issues in regards to braking, especially.

Now Bruce (wingtime) pulls his 245 with a 3/4 ton F-250 diesel, Scott (circlehooked) pulls his 225 with an F-250 gasser, I'm sure they will chime in...

Pulling the 225 is one subject, STOPPING it is another.  The boat and trailer outweigh your Toyota by a good bit so trailer brakes on both axles is a MUST.  I think you will be working that V6 pretty hard towing.  Depending on how your trailer is set up you may have some pretty heavy tongue weight that could be an issue too.  I like to see about 10% of the trailer weight on the tongue.  Highway trailing will be pushing it due to the wind drag from the large frontal area of that boat.  The ramp question depends on the ramp you will use.  Factors such as the angle, surface type etc come into play.  I assume your truck is not 4wd since you didn't mention it.  If it is 4wd than 4 low would help a bunch to pull it up the ramp.

About all I can ad is speed, just take it easy and think ahead and all should be fine.

I'm always interested in these threads since I'm pulling with a 2000, 8cyl, Tundra.  My truck weighs in at about 4500lbs and I would think it'd be heavier than your Tacoma. I think I might get my own questions answered tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes.  Anyway, good luck.

Incidentally, the 8cyl pulled the boat just fine; although, I did have to engage the 4 wheel drive on the boat ramp due to slipping.

I finally got my Explorer out of its wet slip last night and loaded it onto the trailer. the ol Tacoma grunted a little pulling her up the ramp, but never spun a tire. Not planning on doing any long distance towing with it and definately not up to interstate speeds, pulled her home at 40 MPH with no problems.
here she is on the trailer, (not a good pic, got dark on me)

that's a lot of boat for a tacoma.  I had a very nice 2003 Tacoma TRX PreRunner and it was great for my 170 but when I wanted to get a bigger boat I needed to get a bigger truck - 2006 Tundra 4x4 (last of the smaller style). Pulls my 230 nicely. About maxes out the Tundra tow capacity.
