Motor mounting depth for Osprey 225
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:33:48 PM »
Hey guys, just got my merc 250 for my 225 Osprey and need some advice. Anyone know the proper mounting depth?  I'm taking the boat to the person I bought it from to mount it, but I don't think he's too sure of the depth and I'd like to get it right first time around.  If possible, please be precise in detail.  The shop said the prop shaft should be at the bottom of the Euro transom.  I'm looking for someone that has this boat and can tell me where their motor is mounted, or someone that knows for certain.  Thanks!

Bob has the experience, so I'm sure he is giving you good info.  But generally speaking, if the prop shaft is at the same elevation as the keel (which I am assuming "bottom of the euro transom" means), then I think your motor is going to be mounted waaaayyyy too high.  The cavitation plate (or anti-ventilation plate) should be approximately at the water surface when the boat is on plane.  This should put the plate an inch or so above the keel.

Indeed.
Sounds like there's some confusion on the shaft/keel thing.

Mine runs good but the shaft is a good deal below the keel. Bottom plate appears about an 1" above keel and rides about at the surface +/- underway. Note I'm on the 3rd hole down. Point is, it's not the shaft but the anti vent plate that should be around the keel level.

Then again my info is meaningless. I have no E-transom nor an Osprey for that matter.

Bob built these things, so I would guess he would know...

Some very interesting observations regarding motor height, which hole to mount the engine in.  Now, most builders set up their transom heights such that the engine, regardless of manufacturer, will be mounted 2nd hole down.  Yet we see Pete's 225 Osprey with his Yam mounted in the top hole, effectively lowering the engine and, therefore, the cav plate.  We see Bryan's 245 Osprey with his Yam mounted in the 2nd hole down.  Pretty typical.  We see CB's 210 WA with his Yam in the 3rd hole down, effectively raising the engine.  All we need now is someone to show up with the motor located in the bottom hole and we have covered the gamut!!  Good thing no one here will post a Suzuki, they have 5 mounting holes!!!

So this is the deal.  You want the cav plate to be +/- 1/2" from the keel when the plate is parallel with the keel.  At cruise, the underside of the plate should be at water level, the top side just getting splashed.  IMHO, I would start at 2nd hole down.  The Scarab out back, twin 250 Yams on a Stainless Marine bracket?  2nd hole down. The 33 Palmetto, twin 250 Zukes, 2nd hole down with 4-blades.

Sounds like prop "science"...no magic bullet...

Oh, And CB?  You really need to clean that transom up!  What a mess!!

Looks excellent!!

I'll get right on it SB.
Lewis has been giving me tips and supplies and you know how that goes.

That stated, it appears that mounting placement was from the factory ( I certainly haven't changed it) and Bob's right.

More art than science cause the boats are very similar out the door then owners like me add all kinds of junk the rigger can't account for. :silent:

Educated guess at best.

PS.... I do have a redneck E-transom come to think about it. That starboard platform, sans boarding ladder is where UO stand when peein'.

in the marina most of the boats are mounted 2nd hole down, some are 3rd hole, some are first hole. but most seem to be 2nd...

bob, all mercurys 75hp-up and the v-8 yamahas are 5 hole transoms

I should think, Aaron.  I haven't hung a NEW motor since '10 or so, and then it was almost strictly Zukes, they were the only ones selling to Proline...

Kinda funny, when I was at Stamas, I hung and rigged all the outboards, regardless of boat.  Stamas was strictly a Yam company until Suzuki came in and gave them a better deal.  I had a "Motor Location" chart, depending on hull, that was all over the place, including shimming up the drill template.  1st hole, 2nd hole, 3rd hole, even 4th, shim up 3/8", 1/4", whatever.  Standardization?  Yeah, right...

yeah "standardization"

one boat we have, the motor is mounted on the bottom hole, yet the cav-plate is still a 1/4 inch lower than the keel...

Would suck to have to install a jack plate just to get the motor at the right height...
