Where the foam was cut into do you need to seal it so it doesn't soak up water? Or just leave it? Have some of the same issues of old cut foam. Thanks.

Thanks guys for the nice words :thumright:

Met with Doug Friday afternoon and laid out how I want the cockpit to be finished in.  Special thanks to Bondobill who has provided me with his design and photos which my CCP will be modeled after.  Thanks again Bondobill :salut:

My cockpit will be finished just like Bondobill's picture below with the following two changes.  We are planning to raise the splash guard higher since my transom was not raised like Bondobill's.  Not sure how much higher yet.  The second change is adding two 7" scuppers for the water to drain from the cockpit into the splashwell then out of the transom.  These scuppers have a door on them that will close from the transom side if water enters the splashwell.  This will prevent water from entering the cockpit.  No more wet feet

Here is a picture of the scupper.  Might not be the exact one but very close.

Here is Bondobill's picture and in red are where the scuppers are panning to go.  No telling how much quicker the water will drain from the cockpit versus the original design.

Let me see how mine works Bill and that might be the ticket.  If you can access yours, you could just do away with the hoses and cap the end of both thru hulls.  That is what I was going to do, but since he removed them to glass the inside of the transom anyway, he talked me into glassing over them on the outside.  Naturally, a little more money

Deck has been glassed in.  Hatch will be installed for much better access to the bilge.  The open cut out is where the splash guard will go.  Most likely already in there because these pictures are a week old.

Sorry for the quality of pictures.  He sent these to me via his cell phone.

Decided to do this right, so had him spray new gelcoat on the stern.  Also added a second drain on each side to allow quicker exit of water from the splash area.  Also, had the pickup for the original livewell removed and filled and gelcoated over.

John that is the way scuppers are done on the fish boats up here.  They are even put in with the ability to put a door on the inboard side to plug the scupper when a load of traps or fish is gonna put it temporally below the waterline..

Looking mighty nice :thumright:  :thumleft: !!!!!

John,
to add my 2 cents, i would definitely do a smaller round hatch in the floor than the rectangle one you cut out for unless you are going to spring the major dough for an aluminum one. The large plastic ones are such thin crap and that area is going to take a beating by being constantly stood on. My buddies boat had the exact same set up and after 2 door replacements he had me glass in a 9 inch round. Its the same plastic crap but at 9 inches there is more chance that a foot is going to only be partially on it. That big hatch is going to eventually support a foot and the support ribs on the inside of the cover will start to crack and give. Just my experience.

Looking good JD! :salut:

Have you given any thought of having your guy fab you a drip rail and a fiberglass hatch?  IMO that would be the way to go.

Koz, what about the engineered hatches, say from IPS or Jim Black (now part of IPS)?  Did a lot of these at WC/AS and at Proline, really haven't heard any issues such as you describe.  And a lot of foot traffic...

Bill - too bad dancing is not my specialty    Thanks again for your help and your design :salut:

dburr - Thanks :thumright:   My main goal along with the transom, was to get this boat to drain like a modern boat does.  No more d#$n wet feet :!:  No more hoses under the deck, and three main holes below the water line now gone.   As you said, she should drain very quickly.

Koz - Thanks for your input.  Doug and I had this same exact discussion about the hatch when he started this project.  I have not seen the price tag on my hatch but it is not cheap.  Doug knew it needed to be weight bearing and would have alot of traffic on it.  I don't think you can ever have enough bilge access in my opinion.  He might have gone a little bigger than I would have, but he swears this hatch is the perfect size.  He has done an excellent job up to now.  I think my hatch is the same size as bondobill's.  Bill, chime in if you will on your hatch experience.  You brought up a great point Koz and thanks for your input.  BTW, the small pie plate on the starboard side is for the seacock access.

My boat should be finished by Saturday.  Motor is back on and he is working on hooking everything back up.  My batteries will now be under the console.  Got my 2 gauge battery cables in the mail today.  Heading down there tomorrow to get them installed.

I should have much better pictures in the next day or so.

I will see how this works first.  Thanks for the suggestion  One thing is for sure, I have "fabbed" my way to a bigger price tag on this job    Well worth it though :)
