E box refit
« on: January 03, 2013, 07:44:17 PM »
Hey Guys,
Santa was nice and brought me a new Standard Horizon VHF with the built in GPS and RAM3 remote mike,so I thought it was time to update and rewire the e box.I've watched Bob do enough of em...Not quite finished, but here is my progress to date....

got the box empty and mounted the new blue seas box and brackets

VHF and stereo mounted, still need to tie wrap wire

if you look close at the radio you can see it has lat lon on it,thats thru the e box and fiberglass hard top.Spoke with a rep at boat show and he said it would work or they would take it back

still need to mount the remote mike, tie wrap some wires, also had a prob with stereo speakers not working, when I bought them in '09 from west I bought an extented warranty for 8 bucks, brought em back and they gave me a new pair!

Looking good.  I've got a similar project on my winter agenda.  I'm hoping to get it looking half as good as SB's work.

Well done Pete!  I'm a firm believer in mounting overhead in the e-box, that way whatever you throw in there to store...well, DAMN, you can find it later!!!

So the S-H is stand alone GPS...I like, as you don't have to interface with a head unit down below for DSC capabilities.  Unless one has an entirely aluminum electronics box, an internal GPS antenna will see through it just fine...

Now, you gonna play our playoff pool?

Good looking install!  I was on the fence over that radio or an Icom. Let me know how you like it.  I still plan on interfacing it with my Lowrance just so fellow boaters with DSC will show up on my chart.

Good idea there Bruce.  Although, in all the years I've been around, have never known anyone to use the distress button under the red cover...

That's a good thing, right?

This one has the hookup for a chartplotter as well.I got this one for the built in GPS feature, can be used to store waypoints and for navigation if needed.Nice to have a backup. :salut:

Remote mike complete,it is really neat, can control all radio functions and has lat lon, cog, course, speed and time of day on display, built in speaker so when running can leave ebox closed and still use/hear radio.I admit a little overkill, but I like to run with ebox closed,so content doesnt fall out,now I can operate radio much better while underway. :salut:

Well done Pete!!

Like the use of split-loom, although I have gotten away from that (obviously!), as it makes tracing wires that much harder.  But you have new stuff, wired properly, so why not use it?

One thing I don't like, even though you've done the install excellently, is the glass fuse in-line fuse holders.  Even the "better" ones like you used.  For some reason, they just seem to corrode quicker, and when trying to remove a blown fuse from the holder, the fuses end up breaking and you have to dig the base out of the holder.  I try to use nothing but blade type fuses, just my experience...

Excellent job, my friend!!! :salut:  :salut:   Bit more to it than it looks, huh?

You read my mind Bob,I thought about taking out that glass fuse since I have the bladed ones in the blue seas fuse box,but I figured  2 fuses are better than one!I'll open it up and spray some corrosion block in there, great suggestion,BTW what is a good size fuse to use for that stuff?I have 10s in there now, maybe 5s? And there is alot to it.always one more thing to do! I like the split loom cause I can leave the wires a little long and fold em up in the split loom :salut:
