Since you are going to take it out anyway go ahead and remove the old one and just dipstick it. In taking it out you will be able to see if there are any issues with the screws and seating them back in. Don't lose the screws as the Wema doesn't come with them and make sure that the holes are lined up correctly as they only go one way. My tank measured 8 inches so I ordered a 7" wema. Now when it shows about a half left it only takes about 22 gallons. I have a built in reserve so as long as its not empty I am good to go. My tank holds 70. Really well built unit and the gasket they use (cork and rubber mix) is so far superior to one like the seachoice comes with its ridiculous!

As Lewis said, stab the tank. Lewis went a little shorter, although it does leave him with a good deal of "reserve". Usually 1/2" shy of the depth is good...

Pull the sender and stick a sock in the hole. Really, but maybe something other than a sock! Just plug it off while the new one is on it's way. Besides, if you get a WEMA, they're only in Lauderdale, how long can it take to get down to KW?
HOLD THE FORT!!
Just checked the info off that CD, it has the 175 fuel tank drawings! 8" deep...
Wait a minute, don't you have a copy of that CD I sent you?

As a note I wanted to say I am in Fanning Springs, FL. I took my sending unit out last Wednesday afternoon at noon, measured it and ordered a replacement fuel gauge and sending unit from WemaUSA. The timestamp on my confirmation email from them is 2:20pm Wednesday June 26th 2013. Standard UPS Ground.
At 8pm same date I had a UPS shipment notification. At 1pm on Thursday June 27th, 2013 UPS was at the door. 23 hours after I got my order confirmation.
So depending on where you are, and I would say if you are in Florida you will have the item the next day if you order before 2pm.

The 175 fuel tank drawing has a callout in the upper right hand corner for a 7" WEMA SS sender

Jsunstar - can you confirm that the depth of the tank on your 98 175 is 8" ?
Did you order 7" sender or 7.5"?
I'm torn on how much reserve to have.

Actually, I just stabbed mine to check depth. Looks like it has sagged and is 7.5" now. To be more exact, closer to 7.375".
I'm going with 6.5" in case it sags some more. Wema instructions actually say to use 1" less than depth for plastic tanks (1/2" for metal tanks).
The 1/2" sag from original 8" tank depth certainly explains why these have a tendency to leak at the sending unit!

i havent replaced it yet.
mine is the metal tank and the gauge actually still works, its just really corroded on the plate and the spade connector rotted off. i used a little electronics cleaner and replaced the connector and its good enough for me for now.
also, i just fill it up before i go out...
its one of those projects im not in a hurry to tackle.
i am going to replace the entire dash first, i got a new gauge set from MCL in fort pierce. ill replace the sending unit after i tackle that.
research from the web says use a 7" sender so there is room for error. ill keep you posted when i actually pull it though.
