They are everywhere.
My nephew is a cop in a town of 16,000.  He got written up this year for not writing enough tickets.

There has been a big push in Alabama's legislature to repeal a law passed in 1996 that prohibited towns of less than 19,000 from writing tickets on interstate highways.  Money grubbing bastiges.

I got one about 4 years ago from Alachua County on 301.  I was behind a couple of semi trucks.  Maybe I was following too close because I did not see the lowered limit sign.

Going back to the original topic, how about this:

"Inman Campbell, shop manager and instructor at Scuba-Now in Wilmington, acknowledged that a great white shark is one of several species he’d prefer not to see on a dive. But he said the idea shouldn’t dissuade residents from enjoying area beaches.
“I wouldn’t be too freaked out. It’s just this time of year, they love the 60-degree water temperature,” Campbell said. “I dive almost every day, and if I saw a great white, I would just surface and get out of the water.”
Barrington was more enthusiastic, saying he’d happily take to the water in search of the shark if chances were better that he’d actually be present when she surfaced next.
“I’d like to go out in my kayak,” he said, “but I know the odds are slim that I’d be able to find her.”

Yep, to a great white, a kayak is kinda like a taco, huh?  Crispy outside and meaty inside!!!!

She is exactly where we were fishing (Lighthouse Rocks) according to the OIFC......link follows.

Although the water is cold....there is a huge school of pogies on the Beach at Ocean Isle. Very unusual for them to be there this time of year. Maybe she is in there busting pogies?

Scroll down this fishing report...check out the pogy school.

Wow, she's in the sound!

And they are right. That is very near the spot where Blackbeard lost his head.

One of my dad's friends has lived on the outer banks for his adult life. He says (grain of salt necessary) that there have been two shark attacks since he's been down there, in the sound(s) that have never really made the news. Bad for tourism so it just never really gets reported...said a bull shark killed a woman in the 80s in the pamlico.

I'm remembering him telling us that like 10yrs ago and me thinking "yeah...okay old hippy man"...but suddenly doesn't seem quite as far fetched.

Ryan,
If you go back and read that article I linked in regards to the 20' GW caught off the N end of Longboat Key in 1937...about a 1/4 mile off the beach!  We here on the gulf coast don't really think about sharks, although we know they are there, and we certainly don't think about GWs swimming amongst us!!  I've been swimming those waters at the N end of LBK, S end of Anna Maria, almost all my life.

However, one thing to note.  The GW off LBK was caught in winter, when the gulf waters have cooled enough to where it's more conducive to a GW's liking.  WAY too cold to go out for a morning swim for us Floridians!! :shaking:  :shaking:

Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity.
