Great Kills Harbor Staten Island
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:19:56 PM »
I found this video of the aftermath of Sandy in my old stomping grounds. I was there in the 50's, 60's early 70's.

This harbor is one of the largest on the east coast and had plenty of boats. Now most are trashed. My parents who had a 50' liveaboard in the 1960's kept the boat at what is now Atlantis Marina.

Sad - but did you see the Shamrock that went through the bait shop window?  That boat wanted to go fishing!

That bait shop used to be Schmidt's Marine which was an Johnson outboard shop. So was a long narrow building on the waterside of the street, that in now a diner or something. Schmidt's marine was owned by my uncle and I worked there in the late 60's repairing outboards. He even sent me to OMC training school in New Jersey to learn outboard repair.  Too bad they have changed so much that now I don't have a clue how to repair one. I'm sure I can do water pumps and such, but forget the electronics.

Never made a career of outboard repair, not exciting enough for me.

Here's what it looked like in 2011 when I was last there.
