Fual tank grounding
« on: November 06, 2012, 06:43:58 PM »
Hey Bob I was just looking at the 69 21’  Cruiser Incorporated. When I took out the gas tank, their was a ground on the tank. It was grounded to the I/O block. How are you grounding tanks today? Are you tying them to the battery ground and the fill? Or just to the battery? I have grounded the fill to the tank, to stop any static. Is that required or not? Also what size wire should be used to ground the tank? I've use #12 in the past. Is that enough? This boat had #14 grounded to the block. Fill was not grounded.

Walt,
Typically the "bonding wire" runs from a tab welded on the tank to the fill, then from the fill to either a forward or aft mounted ground bus.  Nothing wrong at all with grounding to the engine block as on that Cruisers.  Or grounding straight to the batt.  The key is to have a path for static buildup to dissapate to ground, both at the fill and at the tank.  12 or 14GA will work fine.  Not a whole lot of current is traveling through that circuit in the event of static electricity...

Thanks bob thought I better check, since its been a number of years for me on fuel tanks. All so since I removed the I/O and putting on a bracket and a outboard. That ground path to the block is no longer there. What is interesting is the ground path on my 222ccp. They have the ground going to a thru hull fitting. I have seen that before, no not for a long time. On the 71 19-6 their isn’t a electric fuel gage but a in tank manual one. I can’t see any ground wire from the hatch plate. Soooo I won’t know how that tank is grounded, till I open up the tank coffin cover.
