To plug or not to plug
« on: November 02, 2012, 09:22:03 AM »
I guess with the hurricane just passing this has come up. If your boat is out of the water on blocks or a trailer, and you live near the water, is it better to leave the drain plug in or out.

With the plug in it fills with rain, but will hopefully float if the water level (storm surge) comes up to the point of floating the boat.

If you leave it out your boat sinks.

There are other things to consider also such as boat covers to keep rain out, but they just blow off or tear in the wind. Auto bilge pumps to pump the rain out, but how long can they run until the battery goes dead or the pump burns up.

Any suggestions from the people who have now dealt with this?

Leave the plug in and the water comes up, she floats away and ends up in a pile or the back of someone's pickup..

I think when the BIG one comes you are more or less at the whims of the angry weather gods.  If you can't get out of the way, or on a trailer away from the coastal area then your options are really limited.  Strapped down to the rack, she will not blow or float away, but then the water comes up if the plug is out she fills..  Plug in and the combined lift of all the boats and the rack falls over (maybe).

No real good answer if you don't have a trailer and you can't get away..
