That's the signature fold out platform that makes the boat the "Diver" model.  Pretty rare.

Hey guys, been absent for a few... :oops:  Any how things are back on the upswing and had the opportunity to get out a few times. I'm loving this boat, though I have to admit it acts a little different than what I have become used to. So, do any of you other flatback owners think they are a little "sluggish" coming up on plane? The motor is actually pretty strong, but it has a 19 pitch which also (and most likely) the actual issue.

Either way, the plan is to enjoy her for the rest of the season and then get to work this fall. I suppose shortly I will get a rebuild thread going to lay out the plan.

Cally, that boat is absolutely beautiful. Those lines....Wow :!:

The water on Huron looks exactly like the water in the Gulf Stream here.

This is a question for you and OS as well...do either of your boats have the viewing windows, or anything in terms of original glasswork where the windows were?

There is one pic here in archives showing the windows, but it is difficult to pinpoint the exact location/dimensions.

It would be great to gather info on the windows, if only for documented future reference here on the board.

No evidence of windows that I can see from the outside. I'm not sure when they started putting those in :scratch: , I guess I will be able to see if it originally had them once I pull the floor up. If they were there I will do my best to document locations, etc.

I saw you question to O.S. after I sent that pm last night and when I get home I will take a bunch of pics of the dive door and structure with measurements and post them up for posterity purposes, of course. :D

Until then, I guess I should do some work, since I'm at work!

My flatback jumps up on plane in one boat length and that is without using the trim tabs
With the tabs down there is no bow lift at all when coming up on plane. These flatback boats will jump on plane in dirt, its still amazes me how shallow she can get up.

I run a 17 pitch 4 blade revolution 4 prop. I did try a 19 pitch 3 blade on the boat though before choosing a 4 blade, she still had a rediculously quick hole shot. A 4 blade prop will help alot with the handling characteristic's ie: the cornering or lack of. The slow to get on plane could be extra weight from wet foam and the fuel tank being under the console. Simply put the weight (COG) is further back. Getting the balance right in these boats is the key when doing the rebuild.

Your right about the learning curve to drive a flatback. the closest thing I can describe it to is driving a airboat lol. Even with a extended keel I added during the rebuild anything over 40mph can get hairy during flat calm conditions. When making turns just slow down, when its slick calm you can sometimes feel the boat hop from one side of the hull to the other. This is basically because there is so much boat making contact with the water when on plane.

I have never run a 4 blade prop, and that is great news to hear that it makes that big of a difference. I would have never guessed that it would help with the cornering, that is very cool. I'll have to search the forum for COG info. I am aware that almost all of the rebuilds of these get the tank and console moved forward, I'll need to calculate how much. As far as the foam goes, I cannot wait to get that crap out of there!

I have experienced the side to side "sliding", it reminds me of losing traction in the winter. As far as slowing down in turns go... I learned that lesson the second time out on the boat. Running pretty well W.O.T. (trying to beat some folks back to the ramp) I cut it a little to tight and actually had water creeping over the gunwale during the turn. :pale: It was that moment I realized she handles quite different than a Vee.

On the big positive side though, after the weather turned for the worse out on the big lake I found myself running in a 4-6 foot chop. Although it got wet a few times, I just trimmed her down and went for it and was VERY, VERY pleased with the ride and that is without trim tabs. I thought for sure is was going to be brutal.

Looks like a timeout - let me work on getting that fixed.  Sometimes the distance between the server and you compounds the problem.

I agree. I suppose it's the most simple way to accomplish such a thing though... I'm not sure what, if any changes, I'll do to the setup when I get digging into the boat. The hinges have a fair amount of slop in them and will most likely need to be replaced, but where do you get hinges that haven't been made in 40ish years???

I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

**EDIT** Added some more pics.

I'm happy to say I have pumped a lot of water out of the boat and she sits much better now. I wish I would have taken a picture of how deep it sat the first time I put it in the water, the water was at the top of the tilt actuator then. But now...
