My engine was leaking water out of the regulator/rectifier and I need to replace it.There was know purple wire coming from regulator but one was laying there in the wire harness? I've seen a couple different regulators one said the purple was no longer needed it was for leak down and another one had both the gray and purple. Can anyone tell me what the purple wire does (is for my tac which doesn't work)?

Give me a little while and I will look in my 94 manual for the 175 and see what it says.

I believe the purple and grey are for the tach. Purple is 12v power and grey is the tach sender. If you have power to the tach and your other gauges from the key switch the purple at the engine would not be needed. The grey is the tach sender wire that connects to the "sender" in on the back of the tach.
