Weight of 246 CCC for trailering purposes
« on: August 15, 2012, 10:05:34 AM »
Alright, so this isn't quite a trailer thread (yet), but I'm trying to determine the actual weight of my vessel so i can buy a trailer that will be strong enough, but I obviously can't take it to the weigh station to get the true weight until I have the trailer.  I'm a bit confused b/c I've seen ads for '70s 246's that range from 2550 to 4700 lbs.  That's a HUGE range in weights.  Mine has the factory folding tower (assuming about 300 lbs?) and twin 140 crossflows at about 330 lbs each.   My conservative guess is just under 5000 total weight with minimal fuel, gear, etc. to add to the mix, so I'll probably need a traile that can handle over 5K.  Anyone want to lend some personal experience or real-world input on this for me?

As a comparison, my 245 Osprey, no gear, very little fuel, sitting on the tandem Galv trailer weighed 7K at the scale, take 1500 off for the trailer, that's 5500 before being loaded.  I have twin 3500# axles, and wish I had the bigger ones.  But I'm only doing local travel.  She's a chunky girl...

Always go over kill if you can on a trailer, 7-8 k should do great, with my cabin Marcs numbers are close to mine and I also have 3500lb axles.
