New Transom 78 CCP 22-2
« on: April 02, 2018, 08:47:06 AM »
Pulling off the engine this week to start new transom. Had an aluminum plate last few years to tighten it up. Those spider cracks along the top and side of the transom seems to have spread a lot last season Viewed quite a few videos and forums over the winter Getting ready to start the process. Looking for some help and comments along the way. Plan on doing epoxy and plywood from the inside, cutting the cap about 12 to 18 inches. Saw a quite a few post and ideas. I plan on getting rid of the huge splashwell and bait well. Would like to do what JDupree did. Look great. I laminated the for deck many years ago (prior to internet resources). Repaired aft side decks last few years the correct way with the help of this site and others. Hope I'm not biting off too much. Shout out to JDupree, Capt Koz and others who shared their work. I hope to do the same. I have a few questions before I begin. Live in Rockaway NY I plan on using Boat Builders Central for supplies and a resource has anybody used them or recommend another supplier? Do I have to replace the entire transom if the upper sides by the lift/tie down rings are still solid and not rot or water intrusion?
Apologies if this post appears twice, first one I don't think it worked tried to insert video instead of link.

i would recommend doing the entire transom because you will have already taken out the majority of it, no need in doing a half-ass job. also i dont know how much you want to spend but me personally i like to put coosa board back in because i know it's not going to rot.

Thought about it  but I think I will go with marine ply. Looking at West or Silver Tip not sure.

Might want to check out Raka on the epoxy.  Its blush free at good price.  I get mine from Gulfstream composites.

Do you have any finished pictures of the finessed project  I have a 79 222 CCP and taking off the engine this weekend to do tackle some soft spots on the transom.  For a long time I have wanted to cut out the speedwell and raise the transom and install a transom bracket.   Was wondering if you have any experience on how that  might effect the water-line.  I would like to bring up the stern a couple of inches  Would love to see any finished pictures.  PS  Got any recommendations on a transom bracket other than Armstrong.  With all the other work needed, I need to save some money somewhere.
Thanks, James in St. Augustine

First, read this carefully.

Second, please start a new thread, in this forum, dealing with your re-build. Post lots of pics.

Thanks!

Good luck. :thumright:
